Learning Center

I spent some time this weekend working on a "learning poster" for Nim. Since we already have a writing center and math centers (on file folders), I decided that it should be a "learning center." I think it turned out really well and I must be right because Josh and Megan have both already complained that I didn't make anything like that for them. The fact that we put the same stuff up on a bulletin board doesn't matter at all to them, nor does the fact that it never even occured to me to make something like this when they were young.

I actually wouldn't have made one for Nim either, but I needed something that could be put away each evening since our only permanent bulletin board is taken up with other things. Here's the learning center:

You'll notice that it has places for shapes, letters, numbers and colors. For now, the plan is to change the letter weekly, the number every other week and the shape and color once a month.

You'll also notice that it has one each of things that start with a. I plan to do two of each item when we change to the number two and three when we're doing the number three and so on. That may get a little complicated as the numbers get higher, so we'll see if I actually do that, but that's the plan for now.

I used re-stickable (remember, that's a technical term) glue dots so that I can easily change the letters, numbers, and such as needed. I found the border at the dollar store. Isn't it cute? I may have redeemed myself a teeny bit by giving Megan the leftover border. I may use it to update her math mini-office this weekend. Maybe I'll be forgiven for not making her a cool learning center if I do that.

This will be the perfect complement to all those awesome preschool printables I found the other night.

  4. That is quite cute! My children like to make those kinds of things. Earlier this year, they made themselves a veterinarian's learning center and spent a few weeks treating all the stuffed animals in the house.

  5. Hiya! Great idea -- love how it can be stored at the end of the day. Hmm... I'm also homeschooling a preschooler and I worry about my pacing being too fast or too slow. Can you say more about your decision to change the color/shape once a month rather than more frequently?

Thanks for leaving a comment! I may not be able to reply to each one, but I read them all.
