What you you need:
- egg carton
- X-acto knife and/or scissor
- glue
- yellow and black paint
- google eyes
- black pipe cleaners
Step 1: Cut the "egg holder" parts from the egg cartons. Because we used a cardboard egg carton, which held paint better than a Styrofoam one, but is oddly shaped, I had to trim quite a bit of the carton away. Once you've got the two halves trimmed enough to fit fairly well together, glue two egg carton pieces together, open end to open end, to form an oval (sort of).
Step 2: Cut wings from construction paper. I drew one wing shape, cut it out except for about 1/2 an inch where it joined the other side, and folded it over to trace the shape for the second side before cutting out that part. This way, they were fairly uniform in shape.
I also traced around the edges of each set of wings with a black maker, both to give the wing a bit more color and definition and to cover up my less-than-perfect scissor skills.
Step 3 (optional): For younger kids, trace the stripe outlines around each bee to make the painting easier.
Step 4: Paint the stripes alternating yellow and black. We discovered that, for younger kids, it's a good idea to paint the sets of one color stripe, then, let those dry before painting the second color stripes.
Step 5: Add six pipe cleaner legs. I used the X-acto knife to poke small holes into the bee through which to push the pipe cleaners.
Step 6: Glue on the wings and google eyes.
That's it! A fun, simple project to add to your study of bees or B's. ;-)

That is the cutest littl bee! Thanks for sharing. I was looking for ideas for Monday when we are going to do the letter b.
ReplyDeleteHow cute is that! My 4-year-old would probably love that.
