First, I added a little confectioner's sugar to the frosting to make it a little thicker (thanks for the idea, Susan!). Then, I added a border, a birthday message and some little icing stars on which to put the candles (and to fill up the big empty space since I'm spatially-challenged). Granted, it's not a professional job and if you look closely (please don't!), you can see the mistakes, but it was enough to impress Josh and it definitely made the cookie look more special.
I know you can buy the tips and icing bags at many bakeries and even at many mass-retail stores. With a little investment and some practice with the tips, anybody can add a little pizazz to an ordinary cake and make it look more festive and it can be done very inexpensively. It works for me!
