Weekly Wrap-Up

I just got a call that changed my whole evening for the better -- or made it a little easier, at least. Megan's ballgame has been cancelled. She has practice, but Dad can take her to that while I get the other kids settled where they're supposed to be tonight. One has a friend who is coming to spend the night and the other has a sleep-over at another friend's house. That was going to be tricky with having to be at the ball field by 5:00, so I'm breathing a sigh of relief...even though I really enjoy going to the games.

This week, we've been immersed in the Middle Ages. I had checked out one book that I had thought would just be an occasional reference, but it turns out we all really enjoy it and have been using it as a read-aloud. It's called Castle Diary: The Journal of Tobias Burgess, Page and is by Richard Platt. It's informative and often funny, written in an easy-to-understand way with the language of the middle ages occasionally thrown in for flavor, but not so much that it makes the book hard to understand for the kids.

We've started our Middle Ages ABC book as suggested by Samantha in a recent Homeschool Showcase. The kids are really enjoying doing the ABC books, which could be adapted for any time period and even other subjects besides history. Josh has been excited to see the wide variety of weapons he can include in his book (B is for Battle-ax, F is for Flail...). ;-) These will be going on our table for our homeschool group's Night at the Museum party at the end of this month. This was another Homeschool Showcase suggestion by Cindy and we're so excited to participate!

We also made a small "loom" which Brianna has enjoyed much more than I thought she would. The loom was another idea from the book Medieval Projects You Can Do!.

We ended our week by studying Georgia for our Fifty State Fridays. The Peach State is where my second favorite beverage, Coca-Cola, was invented. Georgia is home of the "three P's": peaches, peanuts and pecans. It's also where Girl Scouts and the carpet industry began and is the largest state east of the Mississippi, which was surprising to me.
