Works for Me Wednesday: Sharpie on Dry Erase Board

Ack! You've picked up the Sharpie instead of the dry erase marker and now you've got permanent markers, rather than dry erase ones on your dry erase board. What do you do?


Easy! Write over the permanent marks with a dry erase marker and wipe clean. This will pick up most of the permanent marks. Use a commercial dry erase board cleaner to get the rest.

Then, I'd strongly suggest hiding the Sharpies. It definitely works for me. Ask me how I know. ;-)

  3. Whew, that was close! I started hiding the Sharpies when I pulled the cap off one and my hand flew up and marked blue across my new white microwave! Luckily, it came right off with Magic Eraser, but it scared the crud out of me.

  4. Wow! You're giving away a book by Katherine Levison? I heard her speak in Tacoma this last fall. I filled up several pages of notes that day, she was great. When I started homeschooling my kids one of the things I wanted to pass on was a love for reading. She had alot of great ideas. I'd love to be in the drawing. :)

  5. Nail polish remover is pretty handy for getting sharpie marks off of some surfaces as well.

    ....now can you help me get the Sharpie off my kitchen table? LOL

    Apparently, my kids think that a Sharpie works well on tissue paper.

  8. I work as a teacher in a middle school. Some of our rooms have dry erase boards, mine has an oldfashioned chalk board. The other day I learned by mistake that hairspray or spray-on deodorant will also take Sharpie off of a dry-erase board!

  10. Also, rubbing alchohol will remove Sharpie from *most* surfaces.

  12. Oh my goodness. I did that a few weeks ago. I had just gotten a brand new whiteboard and I used a Sharpie. Ugh. Fortunately, I realized it in time to wipe it off with water. I'll definitely remember your tip, though!

  13. And, toothpaste will remove Sharpie from a wooden dining table. First hand experience there.

    So, I have marks that aren't sharpie, but are old dry erase marker left on the board for months. And, some wet erase marker. And I can't get it off. And it's a nice, large board. Writing over and erasing isn't doing the trick. And more ideas there?
