When Are You Starting School?

So, when are you starting school? I know that some of my friends have already started and we have some who unschool or school year 'round. What about you? Be sure to vote in the poll on my right sidebar!

I'll vote, too, but, just in case you're curious, we're planning to start on August 3. However, last Thursday, I won a ticket to the Heart of the Matter Online conference!! I am so excited! That's only the second blog contest I've ever won and what a fun one! The sessions are in real time, but they're recorded so that you can listen to them later. I haven't decided which I'll do. It would really be fun to listen to them in real time...but we really need to get school started.

Decisions, decisions.

Since my husband is a university professor, we always start back on the same day that classes start there. It seems to make sense. We live in an area where schools start back beginning the last week of July. When we first lived here, I so protested that that I decided to go with the Northern schedule of starting back after Labor Day. I've since found a happy medium by starting back when DH does.

We are going to be starting August 3. A little earlier than most of the schools in our area. But we plan on taking some extra time off in November for a wedding. I am very excited to start. This will be our second year. The kids really aren't as excited as I am though. :D

Count us in the unschooling/learning all year camp. Our rhythm and flow may change a little bit come fall, but I gave up planning lessons and topics about 2 yrs. ago. Instead, I just try to capitalize on whatever the boys' are interested in. This week, it was caterpillars and metamorphosis. We literally sat and watch as our monarch caterpillar made his chrysalis.

i kept schooling my son this summer, but my daughter just couldn't stand not doing any school any longer, so last week i started giving her some busy work worksheets.
i think we'll officially start the new grade/year in september since that's when stuff with our local homeschool coop starts :)

My kids are each taking a class at the local school and have requested that we follow the school schedule this year, so we start on August 31. The one thing that I am changing, though, is that we work in full weeks, not partial weeks. So, my kids will still have school during teacher workdays but have a full week off during Thanksgiving and things like that to make my planning easier!!

Yeah! I hope you enjoy the conference. Last year's was great!

We had actually planned to be going strong all through the summer, but things changed when my husband got a job in another state. We're having a lot of home economics instead. ;)

We'll start with our new math books and some writing lessons in Aug but, won't start a full schedule of school until the second week of Sept. Last year we went camping the week after Labor day (with another hs family) it was so fun, we had the whole place to ourselves. I'm hoping to do that again this year. :)

In years passed we always went year 'round. This summer we took off because Mommy was about burned out. I finally realize and appreciate the need for a summer break! We try to keep the same schedule as our local school now where the kids but a little more flexible. We start August 10th.

We're planning on starting back around the beginning of August, a few weeks before our schools resume. We will take a week off in September for vacation, so I wanted to get ahead of the game with school.

Congratulations on winning access to the conference! That is great!

We're kind of weird. We started homeschooling by following the Japanese school year, which runs from April to March (since my husband is a teacher). But, when my youngest was born two years ago we got all off schedule, and ended up not finishing that school year until summer vacation. That put us at starting the next year's curriculum in Sept. like American school, and of course it's never really possible to speed up three months to get back on schedule.

So, our official school year is supposed to start in April, but we really don't get our new curriculum until Sept. We will start back the first week of Sept., but it's not exactly a new school year. Clear as mud, right? Gotta love the flexibility of homeschooling!

I'm thinking about starting school earlier than usual. We usually start in August (2nd week) but we have been in the middle of a construction project that has dragged on 5 months longer than we originally planned---so I think if I start early, we can break again for the move in.

I think...

we just attended our state home educator's conference and i am raring to go! except i don't have all our curriculum yet...hmmm! i think we will get going on august 10th. that will give me a little more time to get everything in order.

Do both! That's always my answer. Have your cake and eat it too! Start back to school on the third of August, but only do an hour or two. Then take the rest of the day to attend the cool conference.

We're starting back on the 5th, but, only doing a half day in the morning. Then we're having an early lunch and heading to church to help stuff 300 backpacks with school supplies that will be given out to kids in the community. It will be a perfect first day of school. (My daughter is the one who wants to be sure to help stuff backpacks, and she's really excited about the event.)

Officially we can't start until we get our acknowledgment letter from the state. But if they break down my doors for a little under the table mathematics in July, I think there are some serious issues.

@ Dana -- LOL You let me know if they come break down your door for doing math before your official start time. ;-)

learning never ends, here, sister. just kidding...

that, and wifey starting to freak that we're "not on level." that's a subject spouses deal with all the time. and it's a very tricky pony, i confess, to not riding well in front of an audience...

any suggestions, o' valued comrade???

This year we're starting later than usual. My 14yr olds' classes start Aug 21, but then we'll be in Africa Aug 25-Sep 3rd, so I sure can't do school on a separate continent from my kids, so we'll do a little school in August, but we won't seriously get rolling until the week after Labor Day.

we've been doing a little bit of "on-again-off-again summer school lite" around here, and i think we will keep doing that til mid-sept. summer school has been just history & a little math (& a wee bit of writing disguised as history). i think i will add in a couple things the 1st week of sept but not go full-tilt til the 3rd week.

this is the 1st time in 8 yrs that i have only homeschooled kids, w/no older ones in high school. that always played somewhat of a role in determining our homeschool schedule.

michigan mandates a post-labor day start for public schools (which means not til sept 8 this yr) and i always like to start later than the ps so i can feel like we're getting away with something :-). fuzz' bday is the 11th, so we usually don't begin a full schedule until after that. state law does not require me to do school a certain number of days or hours, so i don't worry about that.
