Works for Me Wednesday: Audio Books

I tried listening to an audio book. Once. I didn't like it.  I'm a pretty fast reader and I have a difficult time listening to someone else read, especially when they're trying to read slowly and enunciate well.  And, it probably didn't help that I tried listening to my one and only audio book while I was walking on the treadmill.

Just a few weeks ago, however, I had a book review to do and it just happened to come with a free audio book download.  It also just so happened that this was about the same time that I was rediscovering a passion for sketching.

Hmmmm...hands-free reading while I sketched?  Not a bad idea.  Turns out that the lady reading this particular book (Sarah's Wish, if you're curious) is very enjoyable to listen to...and she does great voices.  I actually enjoyed listening to the book while I sketched.


After I finished the book, I went back to my newest obsession passion, which I know will make my regular readers groan and think, "Seriously, would you just get over it already," but if you're visiting for Works for Me Wednesday you may not know, so I have to say it -- reading (and rereading and rereading...) the Twilight Saga.  However, I still really wanted to find time for sketching.

Yes, it was a light bulb moment and I so appreciate my local library for conveniently having all four books in the Twilight series in handy audio book format for me.  While I still prefer to read a book myself, audio books are definitely a nice option for when you need your eyes and hands free for another project that doesn't require an immense degree of concentration.  I would think that sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, and other craft projects would fall into that category...though scrapbooking is the only one this very non-domestic homeschool mom would actually know anything about.

  3. While I'm not much of a reader of "fun" books, my kids are. We've listened to "Hank the Cowdog" many times. The books aren't the same. The author does all the voices, and they are HILARIOUS!!!! I highly recommend them.

  4. @ Veronica - It's one of three things:

    1) I am obsessed to the point of needing an intervention.

    2) I'm just that talented.

    3) The Twilight books are the only ones I've willingly listened to on audio book so far.

    @ Jolanthe -- They're read by Ilyana Kadushin, who has done narration for Nickelodeon and Animal Planet (according to the audio book cover).

    I still very much prefer to read on my own because she still reads too slow for me, I don't get as good a mental picture of what's going on when I'm listening as I do when I'm reading, and (this may sound weird) the dialogue doesn't sound the same as it does in my head. However, if I'm doing something else, like sketching or cooking dinner, I have really enjoyed being able to listen to the audio books.

  5. Ok, I have a Twilight obsession too. So nice to hear another (normal?) homeschool mom admit it.

    I normally don't like audiobooks for myself. I love them for my kids- makes long car trips much more enjoyable. I'll have to try the Twilight books on audio though, cause as much as I read them, I'm gonna wear mine out!

  6. I have a terrible time listening to audiobooks - like you, I get impatient because the reader is too slow. My daughter really loves them, though. She likes to get audio copies of her favorite books so she can read the book during the day and listen to it as she falls asleep at night.

    Just sayin' :-P


    However, having a blind child means that we have lots of KIDS stories on cds (and on the computer) ~ Christopher loves listening to stories that way. :-)

  8. Wow! I'm surprised they were available being that it's such a popular series. I love audio books, but I haven't had the chance to listen to many since Bram was born unless we go on a road trip.
