If you've hung around here for awhile, you know that I've reviewed lots of JumpStart products. That's because we love them, so I always jump at the chance to do reviews for them. This time was no exception, especially when I learned it was another Wii game -- and, even better, a family fitness game!
JumpStart's latest Wii title, Get Moving: Family Fitness, is completely different from any JumpStart game you've seen before. Released June 15, this latest JumpStart game is all about getting kids and families active. Featuring fitness expert and celebrity mom, Brooke Burke, Get Moving will do just that -- get the whole family moving as you enjoy activities such as:
- Basketball
- Boxing
- Volleyball
- Baseball
- Football
- Racing
- Step Aerobics
The first thing you'll do when you play Get Moving: Family Fitness, is create your Jumpee, which you may recognize from JumpStart's online game (if not, think: a Mii with arms and legs). You can customize everything about your Jumpee from hair and eye color to right- or left-handedness and Balance Board preferences.
Something that you may notice missing from this JumpStart Wii title are Frankie and his friends. While your younger kids may miss their familiar JumpStart pals, I think this makes this Wii title a bit more appealing for older kids -- like my crew of 8-, 10- and 14-year-olds. Like many JumpStart titles, though, you have fun choices for locale for your adventure. You can choose to play in Egypt, under the sea, on a farm, or a variety of other locations -- or even select random and let the game choose for you.
To play the games in Get Moving, you'll need Wii controllers, nunchucks, and a Wii Balance Board. The Balance Board, though compatible with most of the games, is only required for one -- step aerobics. You can do drills -- such as catching a baseball and tossing it to first base or serving a volleyball -- or you can choose to do routines, which allow you to do five drills in a row without taking a break. Routines are great for burning calories, and Get Moving: Family Fitness will tell you how many calories you've burned, if you're interested.
Each drill or routine has three levels of difficulty: easy, medium, and hard. While I thought medium was pretty easy on most games (which is good, because everyone in the family can truly enjoy the games), hard was, well, pretty hard, so there is some challenge for older kids and adults. While most of the movements were pretty intuitive, we did have a little trouble getting the expected response on a couple of drills. I'm not sure if that was our Wii remotes (could be time to recharge the batteries) or the basic responsiveness of the game. Either way, it wasn't a problem in all the drills, just a few.
We really enjoyed Get Moving. The day it arrived, Megan snatched it out of my hand and ran off to play. It was a while before I saw her again. The games can be played by one or two players and make a great way to burn off a little excess summer break energy. Available at most major retailers for $29.99, Get Moving: Family Fitness is rated rated E for Everyone with Comic Mischief by the ESRB. I guess that's for when you hit your fellow player in the back of the head with the basketball instead of tossing it to the player waiting to catch it. Ask me how I know that. ;-)
So, does Get Moving: Family Fitness sound like fun? I hope so because the awesome folks at JumpStart are giving a copy to one of my readers! To win, just leave a comment telling me your favorite way to get active with your kids. If you'd like a second entry, post about the giveaway on Twitter, Facebook, or your blog, then, leave a second comment telling me that you've done so. Your comment is your entry. I'll choose one winner, at random, on Wednesday, June 23. I'll contact the winner via email, so make sure you leave me a way to contact you. If I can't contact you through email, I'll have to draw another winner.
Good luck!
