I love doing extension activities – it’s that unit study mindset that I love so much. Even though I’m an adult I and my kids are half-grown, we still have some favorite children’s books. A favorite that Megan and I agree on Officer Buckle and Gloria. I couldn’t find any extension activities when searching for children’s book activities with Officer Buckle and Gloria, so I decided to come up with my own.

Megan is getting close to feeling too old for these sorts of things, so I knew I’d have to come up with something that wasn’t too juvenile for her…and I did!

Officer Buckle and Gloria is the adorable story of policeman, Officer Buckle, who regularly gives safety speeches to local elementary schools. He’s always coming up with new ideas, such as, “Never stand in a swivel chair!” (A personal favorite of ours.) However, students are falling asleep during the safety talks…until police dog Gloria arrives on the scene.

All of a sudden, kids are sitting up and paying attention. Students from daycare through college can’t wait to hear Office Buckle’s safety talks and he couldn’t be happier…until he sees a taping of his speech on the midnight news.

Find out what Gloria has been up to and what happens next in this funny, heartwarming book by Peggy Rathmann. Megan and I think it will become one of your family’s favorites, too.

Your dogs might like it as much as ours did if you add our extension activity – homemade dog biscuits!

These homemade dog biscuits are simple to make and healthier for your dogs (in my opinion – this is not a scientifically proven fact) because they don’t contain preservatives. They’re made with “people food” ingredients. Megan toyed with the idea of tasting one, but couldn’t bring herself to do it. I told her it would be safe, but it probably wouldn’t taste very good.

The dogs loved them.

The only change we made to the original recipe was to add more water. It didn’t matter how much we kneaded the dough, it was not going to stick together without a little more water.

We had a lot of fun making treats for the dogs, but there are also a lot of fun extension activities for kids to enjoy, too. All it took was a little searching on Pinterest to find some other great ideas such as:

  1. This is BY FAR one of my favorite children’s books! And while my daughter is also a good bit older than it, she would love to make some dog biscuits and maybe I can talk her into revisiting our old favorite! Thanks for sharing!

  2. I LOVE Officer Buckle and Gloria! (Oh, yeah, the kids like it too. ;)) Great idea with the biscuits. We don’t have a dog right now, but we could bring them to an animal shelter if they would allow it. Which would keep the doggy activity day going and make for a little field trip. 🙂
