The contents of my fridge have changed quite a bit as my body shape and diet have changed. I confess to sometimes feeling a little prideful about my shopping cart, too. It’s usually piled high with produce by the time I check out. With my changing taste buds, there are 10 healthy favorites you’ll always find in my fridge.

10 Healthy Foods In My Fridge

1. Red peppers. I love a crispy, yummy, sweet red pepper. I’m not opposed to the yellow and orange ones either. I love red pepper slices as a side for my sandwiches. I also love them with roasted broccoli.

2. Jicama. Along with red peppers, jicama has replaced chips for me – so much so, that I’d choose red peppers and jicama over chips, even if the calories were the same. I slice this root vegetable up and eat it raw. I’ve never tried to cook it. I probably should sometime.

Sabra Hummus

3. Hummus. Just as I’ve replaced my chips with veggies, I’ve replaced my dip with hummus – not just any hummus either. It has to be Sabra and I prefer, specifically, Sabra roasted pine nut hummus. Yum.

4. Fruit. Apples and oranges have become a staple, though I’ve had to go back to Fuji from Honeycrisp until next fall. In excess of $1 per apple is a little pricey for me. We’re also quite fond of grapes and strawberries.

5. Lettuce. I try to keep lettuce washed, cleaned, and ready to go for salads. I really love the artisan lettuce that comes with four different types in one container.

6. Spinach. There is almost always fresh spinach in my fridge these days. I love it in my quinoa bowl, an omelet (with caramelized onions and mushrooms), or a salad.

7. Mushrooms. I used to eat raw mushrooms in salad, but I can’t handle them raw anymore. I do love them sautéed in a variety of dishes, though: in omelets, on burgers, or with eggplant for spaghetti.

water

8. Water. I always keep a rotation of water bottles in my fridge. We have a dispenser in the door, but it doesn’t get the water cold enough for me. I try to keep a bottle handy at all times. It keeps me from eating or drinking less healthy options. The pink bottle is special – it’s the water I use to mix my Spark every morning.

9. Eggs. Eggs are a great source of protein. Truth be known, though, I usually only eat them on Saturday mornings. However, I have a boy who loves to whip up an omelet, scrambled eggs, or deviled eggs for a snack at any given time.

sweet tea

10. Sweet tea. Okay, the sweet tea may not be healthy, but it’s healthier than it used to be (I use less sugar now) and, really, did y’all expect me to write a post on 10 things you’ll always find in my fridge and not include sweet tea?

  1. Those are staples here too. Funny, the Sabra pine nut hummus is the only hummus (so far!) my boys will eat…it is yummy!

    1. Roasted pine nut is my absolute favorite. There are other flavors that I like, but it’s the best. The only one I don’t like is the spicy. I’m not a fan of spicy stuff.

  2. We LOVE avocados! To be specific, we LOVE organic Hass avocados. They are so yummy in homemade spicy guacamole, and can be a good substitute for eggs (we have a son whose allergic to eggs) in chocolate cake (ok…so chocolate cake’s not so healthy…). Our girls, age 10, love to make a face mask out of them too!

We also love homemade pico de gallo. We make two versions. The traditional pico de gallo and one that includes black eyed peas and fresh corn.

We belong to a produce co-op, so we’re always trying new fruits and veggies. Some are delicious, some not so much, but it’s a great way to introduce new things, and the kids love when they get to help pick them out.

On a side note, we were at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN in early May and saw some kids with your t-shirts on. It was great! We are a homeschool family of six and we saw tons of other homeschoolers there being totally weird and unsocialized too. Good times!

  3. Hummus and red peppers and cold water and spinach and mushrooms and eggs and – oh my, you are making me hungry! But I’ll pass on the sweet tea – you can keep that all to yourself 😉
Thanks for the peek into your frig!

  4. Hummus – yes! Jicama – hmm. I tried it raw and it was just weird to me. But the kids and I love to eat raw zucchini sticks especially straight from the garden.

We replaced most of our processed food on our shopping trips with produce – so about 1/3 of our grocery bill is fresh/frozen fruits and veggies. I thought it would be way more expensive but it really isn’t.

Produce is kind of expensive here in Korea but it is so much better. Fresh from the farm each morning right to the store.

    1. Fresh – really fresh – produce sounds wonderful. In the late spring, my mom gets us strawberries from a farm near her house. She often has to wait for the truck to get back from the field with the strawberries. Those are seriously the best strawberries I’ve ever eaten.

  5. The hummus can be debatable because of its fat content, but I’m not really one to judge anyway. Can’t say I’ve really cared for hummus all that much, but if the pine nut is as good as what people are saying, I may have to try it out some time.

    1. I’ll tell you whatever you want to know…if I know the answer. The basics: I love it! It’s an energy/vitamin drink from Advocare. The energy part comes from B vitamins and 120 mg (if I recall correctly) of caffeine. It comes in a variety of flavors. Fruit Punch is the best. 🙂 I love it because it doesn’t give me some crazy energy buzz like some energy drinks do and there is no crash. Really, the only difference I can feel when I drink it is that I’m not tired and sluggish in the afternoon like I used to be, which is why I tried it in the first place.

The biggest thing I don’t like about it is that it contains sucralose. I am very opposed to artificial sweeteners and almost didn’t try it because of that. I sometimes wish I hadn’t because I really don’t like the idea of consuming sucralose, but I have low iron and iron pills never helped the tired, sluggish feeling I always had. This does. And, now, if you told me it had crack cocaine in it, I’d probably be all, “Oh, it’s not so bad. It’s just a little crack cocaine once a day.”

Okay, maybe I wouldn’t be that bad, but that’s sometimes how I feel about the sucralose. I even decided once that I was going to quit drinking Spark because of it, but I feel so rotten without it now that I have just decided that surely a little bit of artificial sweetener once a day isn’t that bad. I don’t drink coffee, so this is my one vice. Unless you count sweet tea. Then, this is my second vice. 🙂

      1. I feel the same about artificial sweeteners, so I probably will look for something else. Drat! The sweet tea-man I love that stuff! If someone said I had to give tea up, I’d be in trouble for sure! Thanks for all of the info!

        1. Yeah, I wish they’d just use sugar. I’d prefer the calories over the artificial sweetener. I only drink it once a day, so the extra calories wouldn’t concern me.
