Art project. Do those words excite you or evoke feelings of inadequacy? If you’re like me, it leans more toward the latter. Art is not a strong point for me, but something that I’d like to include in our homeschool more often for the benefit and enjoyment of my two art-loving kids (the girls).

We tried out Art Class from See the Light a few months ago. For the last several weeks, we’ve been enjoying their offering for older studentsArt Projects. (You’ll want to read to the end for your chance to try it.)

Review of Art Projects by See the Light

There are currently five titles in the Art Projects line-up with many more to follow. Soon, there will be a year’s worth of projects. The following titles are currently available:

  • Tiffany Window
  • Repeated Sweets
  • Paper Jungle
  • Pointillism Fruit
  • Poppy Collage

And, I may totally have to get my girls the bonus DVD, Cartooning. My oldest loves drawing anime.

The Art Project DVDs are each fully-contained, independent projects, so they can be completed in any order. Each focuses on the style of a different artist. We chose Tiffany Window, in which we completed a marker drawing in the stained glass window style of Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Art Projects Review

Brianna’s completed project

Tiffany Window contains four video art lessons between 21 and 29 minutes in length, though you’ll want to plan on spending a bit more time in between lessons to complete each portion of the project.

The Art Projects lessons are geared toward ages 10 and up. Josh and Megan found these lessons much more age-appropriate as far as the way the instructor, Pat Knepley, addresses students, but they also found the project more challenging.

That’s not to say that they didn’t enjoy working on it, because they did (though Josh would have preferred drawing something other than flowers – he’s such a boy). They just weren’t quite happy with their final results. Their artistic ability hasn’t quite caught up with what they envision in their minds. (Neither has mine!) They asked me not to share their completed projects, so you just get to see mine and Brianna’s. {grin}

My completed project

Although mine didn’t turn out quite like I envisioned, I was pretty pleased with the final results.

Brianna thought that the video lessons were interesting and that Ms. Knepley shared many helpful hints. We’d definitely enjoy doing another art project from See the Light.

And, of course, it’s always nice to be able to do art lessons in your PJs.

Like the Art Class DVDs, Art Projects use basic art supplies, most of which you’ve probably already got sitting around your house. All we had to purchase for this project was some poster board and artificial flowers.

Art Project Supplies

In the Tiffany Windows project you’ll learn such art techniques as:

  • Planning your composition
  • The rule of thirds
  • Using the color wheel
  • Blending with markers (That was fun!)

You’ll also learn more about stained glass windows and Louis Comfort Tiffany and his influence on and contribution to the world of art.

  1. This sounds great! Although my boys are still a tad young, they would enjoy it I’m sure. We never seem to find enough time to do art in our busy homeschooling days. Thanks!

  2. I am interested in the whole series but I think my son would LOVE the bonus video on cartooning. I personally like pointillism but all seem to be good art subjects : )

  3. I really like the pointillism one…goes right along with the art we are studying. 🙂 They all look good! Thanks so much for sharing.

  4. It was a little difficult to choose one they each look like so much fun for the kids. I’d choose Tiffany Window.

My girls are insane about horses so if that one had been available my decision would have been easier, 🙂

  5. I like the poppy collage and so would the oldest daughter but the other girls would vote for paper jungle! Looks like a project mom would be working with them! Thanks for the chance to win!

  6. We need so much art help. I’m art challenged and my daughter has no confidence in her art abilities. She takes occasional art classes at a local pottery store that does painting, molding, glass work, etc. Still, they are pretty expensive and she still feels inadequate at the end. This sounds like it might help us both!

  7. They all look very interesting! I would choose Tiffany Window. The kids would prefer to start with cartooning! I was struggling with what to do for our art curriculum…excited to find this!!

  8. I have been struggling with our art curriculum…this is a great find! They all look really interesting! I think we would start with the cartooning and then work our through the others.

  9. I have been trying to subscribe to your blog through email, I sent the info and it reconginized I sent it in when I tried to re do it. But it hasn’t sent me a confirmation email with link. I have checked my spam folder too. Just didn’t know what was wrong

    1. I tried to manually subscribe you. Let me know if you don’t receive the confirmation email. Thanks for trying!
