Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I can’t even begin to express how happy this week’s gorgeous, spring-like weather has made me! I don’t put much stock in groundhog predictions, but all the ones in our area predicted an early spring. I’m starting to hope they were right. If not, at least maybe this week will get me through until it’s actually spring.

Are you ready for my big news this week? Brianna passed her state boards on Wednesday! She is now a licensed cosmetologist! We are so very proud of her…you know, even though we didn’t set the bar very high. {eye rolling}

I guess technically she is now eligible to apply for her license. It will take several weeks to get her actual license in the mail, but she’s putting in applications and resumes for some of the places she’d like to work.

She’s also pursuing a lead on a full-time seasonal job that would be over in May. We’re thinking that the timing might work well while she waits for her license. It could be a good opportunity to build up her savings while she waits.

She wants to take some theatrical make-up classes in a town about 3 hours away, so having a little stock-pile of funds would be helpful.

Lazy Gus

The weather has made for some very lazy cats.

In other news, we may be getting Josh a car. As a matter of fact, by the time you read this, we may have made a decision and be on our way to go get one we found on Wednesday that we really liked. We had planned to get Brian a new car – a newer Mustang – and give Josh the Mustang Brian is driving now.

Then, we looked at the cost of insurance for two Mustangs and a 16-year-old boy. Ouch.

So, we decided that we’d look for something that Josh could drive for the next two years until he turns 18 and his insurance drops. That would also give us something for Megan to learn on since she’ll get her learner’s permit next year, since Brianna will probably be working full-time and using the other car by then.

It would also give Josh two years’ driving experience before we turn him loose with a Mustang – a huge plus as far as his mama is concerned. And, Megan could have the car at that point.

Brian wound up taking the week off, so Josh has had the opportunity to practice the life skills of learning what to look for in a used car – one that fits our budget, is dependable, has low miles, and looks decent. He’s also got to practice talking with car salesmen, and researching loan and interest rate options and insurance rates.

Lazy Chloe

Overall, it’s been an extremely pleasant week back home after being away last weekend. I had such a fantastic time at the weekend retreat. The time passed way to quickly and I can’t wait to go again.

It was good to get back home, though. The place was close enough that I was able to go from there to church Sunday morning instead of having to come home the night before. Josh played on the main worship team again this week. It makes my mama heart happy to see my boy using his talents to worship God.

Does your state require standardized testing? If so, you may want to check out my article at About.com this week: A Homeschooler’s Guide to Standardized Testing and Test-Taking Strategies for Test-Phobic Kids.

Now, I’m off to enjoy my weekend. I hope each of you enjoy yours, too!
