Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! While you’re reading this, chances are I’m at the CSTHEA Homeschool Fair in Chattanooga, Tennessee manning the Trail Guide to Learning booth for my friends at Geography Matters. So, before I forget, I want to remind you that you’re invited to link-up your curriculum posts so that everybody can take a peek at what you’re using this year.

You can view our 2014-2015 homeschool curriculum by clicking the hyperlinked text or by clicking the “curriculum” button in the navigation bar just below my header up above. This year, I’ll be homeschooling a 7th grader and a 9th grader and I’m strangely excited about that – and much more confident with this high school thing than I was the first go around.

Now that you know where to take a peek at our 204-2015 curriculum choices, let me tell you about my week!

Monday was Brian’s birthday, so the whole family went out bowling to celebrate. We’re not very good bowlers, but that’s okay. We have fun…and, during Kid’s Bowl Free, it’s cheap fun. We bought shoes this year, so now we can go bowling completely free.

The kids usually score a Dairy Queen ice cream cake for their birthdays, but Brian just got a Blizzard – and, of course, the rest of us had to have one, too. What’s your favorite Blizzard flavor? Hands-down, mine is Butterfinger. I love that they now have the much less guilt-inducing “mini” size now.

Tuesday was something Megan always looks forward to (well, for the last two years, anyway) – the middle school rafting trip. Our youth pastor always takes a big group from church. They had a blast! There is something about rafting that wears a person out, though, so Megan came home, scarfed down some food, and crashed.

Josh stayed home, of course, since he’s a high school student now. He did go out later that evening and meet his friends for bowling. He’s not a huge fan of bowling, but it’s always more fun with friends.

Wednesday {drum roll} we started school! It actually went really well and everyone had surprisingly good attitudes (once they woke up). We’re starting out pretty light, though, so there’s not much to complain about. With such a busy week this week and Megan being gone the first part of next week on a local mission trip, my main goal right now is just to get back into a routine and complete the Victus Study Skills System.

First Day 07.16.14

I’ll be sharing more about Victus in a few weeks, but the gist of it is that kids figure out their primary study style, then, learn study, time management, and note-taking skills. I’m excited because each of those are skills that will benefit them throughout their lives and they’re at great ages to develop them. Developing these skills at the beginning of the years of independent learning should set them up for a much better high school experience than they might otherwise have. Can you tell I’m excited about the possibilities?

(I told Josh to “look studious” since he’s in high school now. Goofball.)

Thursday was a busy day with meeting a friend to run early in the morning (we couldn’t have asked for better weather), followed by school, loading up the car, heading out to set up at the curriculum fair, and dinner with extended family. See? Aren’t you tired now?

(This is how Megan felt about having her first-day-of-school photo taken.)

Today, I’ll be busy at the curriculum fair. Stop by and see me if you’re in the Chattanooga area. Have a wonderful weekend, y’all!

  1. Oh my word is it really the start of another year already? Seems like just now we were starting the last!

    I just love Megan’s back-to-school photo. 😀

After reading this I’m wishing we had Dairy Queen here in England. We’ve been having a rare heatwave this week and those desserts sound very appealing even though I have no idea what they are let alone what flavour I’d like. (Ok so I’ve just googled them. Now REALLY want one. Chocolate Xtreme please!)

  2. I’d stop by and say hi if I were closer!! 🙂

Oh a rafting trip!! I remember when I went on one with my church group. Oh boy…I don’t know what I was thinking. I didn’t wear a bathing suit! I wore regular clothes (including pants that were a bit hammer-style-ish), full hair and make up. Disaster!

Thanks for the memory and laugh. I’m off to check out your curriculum.

  3. We purchase bowling shoes for our kids once we are pretty sure that there feet are done growing- we have gotten some pretty good deals on them. It is definitely worth it. Most of us are also awful bowlers but we love to go anyway too! 🙂 Good luck with your upcoming school year.

    1. Yes, that was us, too – trying to wait until we were pretty sure their feet were done growing.
