Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! In normal first week of break fashion, it’s been very busy – but the productive kind of busy, not the hectic kind. I’ve already marked several things off my summer to-do list, such as cleaning the basement, cleaning out/organizing the school cabinet, cleaning out the junk drawer, and cleaning out the medicine cabinet – all those little things that I never have time for during the school  year.

We’ve also done some plain, old, ordinary housecleaning since Brianna had a couple of friends spend the night on Monday for her birthday. It’s hard to believe she’s 19. It’s also a weird feeling to have extra cars parked out front because your kid’s friends can drive themselves to your house.

Sunday afternoon we went to visitation at the funeral home for my neighbor’s son. I’ve never seen so many people at a funeral home in my life. It’s clear that he and his family touched many lives. He was a highly decorated Marine, so it was fitting that he was laid to rest on Memorial Day. It’s a sad situation, but I’m so happy the family has the peace of knowing that their son (and grandson and brother) was a Christian.

Monday Brianna and one of her friends spent the day at a local amusement park. It worked out well that it was her turn for our one-on-one breakfast this week, so I took her out for a birthday breakfast before they left. And, of course, there was a Dairy Queen ice cream cake. Birthdays are always the perfect excuse for ice cream cake.

Blowing out the candles

At breakfast, a song by one of Brianna’s favorite bands came on. She mentioned how much she’d love to see them in concert again. That made me quite happy since we got her tickets to one of their shows for her birthday.

Concert tickets

Also on Monday, we had a new dishwasher delivered. That was fun – except not really. Brian noticed it was wet inside before he installed it. That seemed odd, but we didn’t think too much about it. However, once he got it installed and turned it on to check everything out, it started leaking water out the bottom – a lot of water.

He called Lowe’s and was told that there were no more of that model with which to replace it. The girl on the phone (who, to her credit, was very nice) suggested that we could replace it with the model below it. According to her, it was the same washer, just minus a few feature, and a little louder (higher decibel rating), for the same price.

Can you please tell me if there is anyone on the planet who would think it was a good idea to get fewer features and more noise for the same price as the nicer model washer you purchased?

Dishwasher box

Somebody is loving the dishwasher box.

Um, no. So, they scheduled to have a repairman come out to see what the problem was. We could decide from there if we wanted them to repair it or wait for a replacement model to come in. It turned out it was a pretty major repair and little quiet, non-confrontational me politely told the repairman not to order the part because I wasn’t paying for a brand-new dishwasher that needed a repair from the moment of installation.

To make an already long story not quite as long as it could be, when my highly irritated husband called back and spoke (very politely) to a manager, they miraculously found us another dishwasher just like the one we purchased in stock. When we got it, it was wrapped in a lot more packaging than the first washer and had no water inside.

It was also completely sealed in the box, unlike the first washer. I’m trying to give Lowe’s the benefit of the doubt that maybe it’s common practice for the delivery guy cut off the bottom of the box and remove some of the packaging in the truck, but it sure does look suspicious – like maybe we weren’t really delivered a brand-new washer the first time.

I’m letting it go, though, because we have a really nice, new dishwasher now that is so roomy and so quiet! The first time I ran it, I actually went and checked a couple of times to make sure it was still running.

Rainy Day

A good thundershower is apparently very entertaining.

Dishwasher stuff took up most of my Tuesday since that’s when the repair guy came out. Wednesday was a sleep in day after two early, busy days. Want to know something crazy? I’m not sure I really liked sleeping in. I mean, I did at the time, but I’ve gotten so used to being up early that all day Wednesday I kept glancing at the clock unable to believe that it was so late already.

Thursday was a catching up odds and ends kind of day. I like that kind of day. It’s relaxing and makes me daydream about my kids learning completely independently while I just hang around and take care of the house and stuff all the time. Just wait, though. In a few weeks, I’ll be excited about getting back to school and a normal routine.

Today, the only important things on the agenda are grocery-shopping and a hair cut for Megan. Yeah, I’m enjoying summer break.

  1. We’ve got one more week to go before our two week break. Is it bad of me to be winding down this week? Next week I’ll probably be near comatose. I’m looking forward to two weeks of not doing very much!
If you want, I could recommend a dishwasher who is cheap as chips – it’s called T12, L11 and C11 with some occasional help from A5 and B3. No initial outlay, guaranteed not to break down (or at least not all at the same time). The only thing is the noise and the water on the floor- there is always a little bit too much of both, but when you’re getting your dishes done for free, well, you can’t really complain. I could have them wrapped up and shipped over to you in no time. Tell you what, I’ll even get rid of your current dishwasher (the new one) at no extra cost. Yes, I know, we really do provide incredible service….
    Have a great weekend Kris!

Love this! We are approaching our last 2 weeks before summer break and our school schedule is changing as subjects of the year are getting done and I am finding free time for me. I do start to drift off and think if the kids were in school….yet 8 years later, we’re still going.

Sorry about the dish washer drama. Something *new* should not need repair on day one!

  3. Happy birthday to Brianna!! Time sure flies…

Oh, how *good* that Lowe’s was *able* to find the same dishwasher for a replacement. How suspicious indeed about the packing job and condition upon arrival. Hmmm. But yay for a new dishwasher!

    Enjoy your break!

  4. I love the idea of one-on-one breakfasts with your kids. This is my first time here so you may have mentioned it before in another post but I’m just wondering how often you plan those? I have a 6 year old who is always wanting to spend one-on-one time with me (which is hard because I also have a four year old) and I think she would love the idea (they both would) of having one-on-one breakfasts together!

  5. We had a simlar experience with Lowe’s when we replaced our kitchen stove. They somehow managed to lose not one but TWO stoves before they finally upgraded up to a NICER stove for a dicounted price after a scathing conversation from me. Grins.

I’m so glad the rest of your week was productive! Belated happy birthday to Brianna!

  6. Happy Birthday to your daughter!

I’m sorry about your dishwasher woes and glad you finally got it resolved and you got the one you wanted. I hate dealing with sticky situations because I’m not very confrontational. But my husband is pretty good at that sort of thing. 🙂

    1. Yes, my husband is much better at those things than I am, too. I am typically very non-confrontational.
