Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! I’m happy to report that this week has been much less eventful than last week – thank goodness! On top of that, it’s supposed to be a beautiful, sunny weekend and we’ve got nothing on the calendar. That makes me a very happy camper going into the weekend.

Last Saturday, I called a mandatory cleaning day. Brianna didn’t have to go in to work until 6:00, so she got to join in on the fun. I’ll be honest – every day this week that I’ve gone to work out in my neat, tidy, dusted, and vacuumed basement, such a peaceful feeling of contentment has passed over me and I’ve reflected on the fact that it was worth all the nagging and griping I did Saturday. {grin}

Monday, Brian and the kids went to lunch with his parents, leaving me home to enjoy some much needed peace and quiet. I didn’t get as much done as I’d have liked, but I got a decent start.

Tuesday I went for a run before going to vote. Well, I came home and took a shower first. I’ll be honest, though, I seriously considered just going straight from running so I wouldn’t have to get back out. The friend I ran into who hugged me was probably glad I decided again that.

As a treat for getting out and voting (okay, that was totally just an excuse), I went by Chick-fil-A and got myself a gallon of tea. I started to just get a single serving, but that seemed like such a waste of gas.

See? All buckled up for a safe ride home. Okay, I’m really not that crazy. I was by myself and didn’t want the jug to fall over and spill. I love Chick-fil-A tea, but a gallon of it in my still-new-to-me-car floor would probably turn me off of it for life.

Wednesday, Megan and I had breakfast together before getting our school day started. Now that Brianna is in school and not home by the time the breakfast kid and I get home, I’ve started feeling sorry for whoever didn’t get to go and bringing them something home to eat. It’s more expensive that way, but it also means that everyone loves Breakfast with Mom Day whether they get to go or not.

In school, it was project week with history and review/test week for science, so there wasn’t anything too exciting going on for school. I did write a practice paragraph with the kids for our their WriteShop assignment. It was a biography and I chose Harrison Ford. Did you know that he is listed as one of 50 people banned from entering Tibet? The things you learn homeschooling your kids.

I’m also planning to make some changes to our history curriculum. I like what we’re using, but the kids want more direction – they’re not really impressed with project-based learning which came as a bit of a surprise to me and will probably be another post in the near future. I ordered The History of the Ancient World by Susan Wise Bauer, along with the study guide and lots of great books about Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. We really enjoyed Story of the World, so I’m hoping this will be a good fit.

Everything is supposed to be here this weekend, so I think we’ll go ahead and jump in next week even though we’ll only have two weeks before our long Christmas break (Thanksgiving through New Year’s). I figure we’ll get started by doing a quick read though of the early chapters, reviewing some of the topics we’ve already covered.

I think that’s it for me. Let’s get Friday done so I can start enjoying my weekend!

  1. I’ve heard good things about using The History of the Ancient World with high schoolers. Looking forward to seeing how it works for you guys!

  2. We are working our way through Story of the World(me for the 2nd time) and really love it! Please let us know if you enjoy The History of the Ancient World when you’ve completed it… Another favorite of ours are all of the Genevieve Foster books and we just finished “Augustus Caesar’s World”. The detail she includes really makes all the events in that time period stick in our minds!
