Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! Can someone please explain to me how we can possibly be down the last week in July? Where has the summer gone? And, why, oh why, am I down to my last week of summer break?! {sigh}

We plan to start our new school year on August 1. When will/did you start?

I’m not even sure I can recap this week because it’s gone by so quickly. I know that my girl (the youngest) got back from her mission trip last Friday. We were so happy to have her back home!

My boy went to a job fair, put in some applications, and had his first job interview yesterday. Seriously, where have the years gone?

Josh ready for interviews

(Yes, that’s his fake “hurry up and take the picture, Mom” smile. I’m just happy he let me take one without grumbling.)

Josh and I went out to breakfast yesterday, then went to Kohl’s for a couple of job search shirts since all he owns are t-shirts and a couple of long-sleeved dress shirts – not what you want to be wearing to put in application in the South in the July.

Those are the highlights of the week. The low point was the passing of our outside dog, Jake. We brought him home from the animal shelter as a young dog (maybe a year or two old) on July 25, 2003. He died last Saturday.

I knew early last week that he didn’t have much time left. He wasn’t eating well and was very feeble. I knew how hard Megan would take his passing, so every day I’d go out and check on him, urging him to eat and encouraging him to just hang in there until Megan got home from her mission trip. I knew she’d be crushed if she didn’t get to say goodbye.

He obliged. We all got to spend some time with him Friday evening. He gobbled up dog treats like they were candy and seemed to perk up. He looked a little stronger and much more alert. I thought he just might rally, but it wasn’t to be. We found him dead Saturday morning.

It was sad, but not unexpected. Over 13 years is a good long life for a dog.

This weekend, it’s my turn to take a kid to a concert. Sunday, I’ll be taking Megan and her BFF to see 5 Seconds of Summer in Atlanta. I’m not especially excited about going to the concert, but I am excited to spend time with the girls, so it will be fun.

Next weekend, I’m planning to go to the Southeast Homeschool Expo if nothing changes between now and then. Y’all, it’s been a long time since I’ve been this close to the start of a new school year and been completely unsure about most of what we’ll be using next year. I know we want to make some changes and I’ve got a list of resources I want to look at, but there’s no telling what I’ll come home with.

Too much light

In case you missed it, this week at About.com I’m talking about homeschool myths that may have infiltrated the minds of homeschooling parents, causing unnecessary stress and worry. I hope you’ll check it out!

  1. Oh Kris, I’m so sorry to hear about Jake (((hugs)))
I can’t believe you are talking about going back to school! We have just had our first week of holidays and it has been bliss. Is it bad that I am in bed until almost 9 every morning? We have five more weeks off…..(sorry, didn’t mean to rub it in…honestly!)

    1. Enjoy your break! We always wrap up school by the end of May due to several summer birthdays and a desire to enjoy some the warmer weather before it turns scorching, which doesn’t take long in our part of the country. I have a feeling the first week of school is going to be a pretty laid-back, “let’s just try to get back in the swing of things” affair.

  2. I’m so sorry about youor dog. Losing a pet is really hard. A couple of years ago, our cat had kittens. One morning she had moved them, and my daughter didn’t know it and accidentally stepped on one when it was about 3 weeks old. It was the runt of the litter and was always getting crowded away from the mother and couldn’t nurse, so my daughter diligently bottle fed it and stimulated its bottom to get it to go to the bathroom. Although we weren’t going to keep that one, I told her she could because of how hard she worked. When she stepped on it, it lost the ability to walk and could no longer hold up its head. She tried so hard over the next week to nurse it back to health- waking up every 3 hours to feed it, keeping it warm, etc. One morning she woke up and found it dead. I shouldn’t say ‘it.’ ‘He.’ His name was Sammy (after Sam Winchester from Supernatural) She was devastated and for weeks she wrote “It’s all my fault” all over her school work. To this day she still has his picture as the background on her FB profile. I don’t think she’ll ever get over it.

    1. Oh, how heartbreaking! I can only imagine how devastated your poor daughter must have been. One of my kids dropped a young kitten from a litter we had years ago. She didn’t have problems eating or walking, but you could tell she just wasn’t quite the same. I’ve always regretted adopting her out. I have no reason to suspect that the family didn’t take care of her, but I knew she might need some extra care and I always wished that I’d kept her to ensure that she got that.

  3. I know how much you adore your pets and losing your dog must be heartbreaking. I’m so sorry. Glad your son has an interview. Job fairs are great. We also are starting back Aug 1st, even though my youngest has been on a light schedule this summer.

  4. We start August 22 this year, since we follow roughly the same schedule as my teens’ private high school.

It occurs to me that I should probably start thinking about buying curriculum. I’ve got everything picked out, I just haven’t ordered yet.
