Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve all had an amazing week! It’s been a decent one here. It has been gloomy and rainy all week, but it’s been very warm with highs in the upper 60’s, as well so I’m not complaining at all.

Monday, not only was it gloomy and rainy, but Brian and I had to go have our taxes done. That’s never fun – especially when you owe the government money for the first time ever. We did squeeze in a lunch date, though, so it wasn’t all bad.

Wednesday was a pretty exciting day. Josh got his learner’s permit! His birthday was in December, but, well, we’re kind of procrastinators around here. He would say that I’m the procrastinator, but whatever. Let’s not trifle over details. He’s excited to begin learning to drive. Now there’s a battle going on over whose car he’s going to learn on. {grin}

Look out world - he passed!

For the record, I’m willing to let him drive mine – but only in parking lots right now. I’ve told Brian – and he agrees – that I think Josh is going to be a good driver, so none of the cars are in imminent danger as far as I’m concerned. We’ll probably enroll him in a local driving school to save money on his insurance, so he may be mostly driving their (dual-controlled) cars for awhile.

Um, that may be it. That may be all the excitement from our week.

This probably isn’t terribly exciting, but Josh told me earlier this week that he likes the science and English workbooks in the curriculum we’re using, but not the history. That’s the first time he’s ever really expressed any particular preference for curriculum. He’s always just kind of gone along with whatever. I still plan on taking him and Megan to a curriculum fair this year so they can make their own choices for next year, but I like that Josh is taking a bit of ownership and deciding what he wants to look for in his choices for next year.

And, finally, I want to point you to my articles on About.com this week in case you missed them. In Homeschool Challenges: Staying Motivated as the Homeschool Parent, I the share burnout-busting tips that have saved my sanity these last 12 years.

In What to Do When the Science Experiment Fails, I offer tips on, well, what to do when the science experiment fails. Not that I have any experience with that, mind you. {ahem}

This weekend, Megan has her 2nd gymnastics meet. It’s the last one for this season and, extremely sadly, the last one with her current coach. She has been working on a few specific things since the last meet and was very excited to nail her beam dismount several times this week. Her coach commented on how much more confident she seems and I’ve noticed it, too. We’re looking forward to a fun meet!

  1. Congratulations to Josh! Glad to know we aren’t the only procrastinators! We put off so long with my oldest, he was 17 by the time he got his permit and 18 by the time he got his license!! I have another almost 17 year old now who wants to learn but…. yeah, procrastination is a kicker!

  2. Oh, I’ll have to start reading about.com again! When I first started homeschooling in 2000, that was a lifesaver to me! It seems like it was one of the only sites out there back then!

    1. Yes, Sarah. We started in 2002 and About.com was a much-used resource. I was so excited to be offered the position there!

  3. Congrats to your son, the new driver! My daughter had to take driver’s ed, as it is required in WA, where we live, but most of what she learned, she learned from me and her dad….We had a lot of fun driving to parks, classes, and the like.
