Weekly Wrap-Up: The one with the really awesome snow
Happy Friday, y’all! How’s your week been? We’ve had snow – twice! Last Friday night we went to Sevierville, Tennessee (Pigeon Forge) for Megan’s first gymnastics meet – and thought we were going to be spending an extra night due to snow. It warmed up around noon, though, and by late afternoon, the roads were clear enough to start home.
Then, last night, we got a whopping 8” of snow! I know that doesn’t sound like much to some of you, but I live in Georgia. It’s been several years since we’ve had that much snow. I’m not generally a fan of snow, but I do like it when it’s deep enough for everyone to stay home and play for a day or so – and polite enough to melt and go away quickly. Isn’t it beautiful?
So, we went to Pigeon Forge last weekend and stayed at the Wilderness at the Smokies Lodge, which features a huge, indoor water park. I’m not a fan of water parks, but the kids had a blast! It was a wonderful mid-winter treat. We had dinner at Big Daddy’s Pizzeria which is one of the best pizza places I’ve ever visited. Yum!
We were extremely thankful for the resort shuttle Saturday morning. There are two separate hotels at the lodge – we were in one, the event center was in the other, and the parking lot was icy enough that I didn’t want to attempt to drive. The shuttle took us from the front door of our hotel to the front door of the other.
It was Megan’s first meet ever and she did great. Her scores weren’t what she’d hoped, but her coach (and her parents) thought it was a great first meet. Now she knows what she needs to work on for the next one – which is coming up in a couple of weeks.
Monday, I called a life skills day. The weekend had just been crazy, the house was a disaster, and I was feeling completely out-of-sorts with the clutter. Everyone pitched in and we got the house cleaned and laundry caught up so we were ready to hit the books on Tuesday.
Brianna was home Wednesday since her school closed due to impending snow (that didn’t start until 4:30 – about 2 hours after she would have been done with school for the day). When it started, it started, though. We were shocked at how much snow was already on the ground at bedtime. It really was gorgeous when we woke up yesterday morning.
And, yes, snow cream was consumed.
I’ve had several articles published here and there on the Internet this week. One was a very heartfelt post about all those little things I miss now that my babies are growing up. I bet it will resonate with many of you.
Second, I’ve published my first two posts at About.com: Are Homeschool Parents Really Qualified to Teach? and How to Prepare for a Homeschool Convention. I hope you’ll check them out!

Oh, my, I’m very jealous of your snow. I want some!!
Well done to Megan on her first meet – I bet you were so proud of her.
Are you allowed to take photos of her gymnasticing? Lil has stopped gymnastics and taken up trampolining which uses her gymnastic skills but she is with people her own age. She is storming through all her badges thanks to the gymnastics and is thoroughly enjoying something she can do at home.
Have a great week end!
Yes, photos were allowed…but I was too busy making videos. I’ll have to see if she’ll let me share one, but it will probably be after the next meet. She was really being hard on herself about this one. Trampolining sounds like something Megan would love.
It is beautiful! I really tried to figure a way to come visit my parents so my DS could play in it for the first time but it didn’t work out. Maybe next year 🙂 Hope you have a great weekend ahead!!
I am really jealous of your beautiful snow! We did get a dusting here but were hoping for more. Thanks for sharing the great pictures!
8″ of snow for GA is a huge deal!!! We had flurries again here in Germany. I love those weeks of ‘life skills’ classes. I think it helps the kids in many ways!
Our snow was just lame. Just enough to look pretty for a couple of hours, while the mud got extra soggy underneath. 🙁 Glad y’all had a fun time playing in it, though!
The snow looks beautiful! I had to call a life skills day too when we returned from our cruise. No one had anything to wear. lol
You got even more snow than we did in the mountains of North Carolina. What lovely pictures. Congrads! to your daughters meet.
Blessings, Dawn
We have had quite a bit of snow here in Virginia also. My youngest son attends public school and has had 7 snow days in 2 weeks. We are ready for it to be gone. My older son who is homeschooled laughs every day his brother is home since he knows that time needs to be made up somewhere in the future. My youngest son is a gymnast. It is hard to get pictures and videos. We take pictures during warm up and videotape the actual event. I’m glad Megan’s meet went well. It’s good to have the initial meet done. She has scores that she can improve upon and that first meet nervousness is done. I look forward to hearing how she continues to do. Enjoy your week!
That’s what everyone was telling her about the scores – that now she has a starting point to work on improving. I’m with you about the snow – I’m ready for spring!
Congratulations on the first meet! We’re in our third meet season, and it’s a fun (but sometimes tiring) ride. 🙂
It looks like you all got all the snow my kids were hoping for. We ended up in South Carolina being right on the edge of where it turned into just rain. I didn’t mind, but they would have liked to have snow.
Congratulations to Megan on her first meet. It’s always good to get the first one out of the way since it is such a learning experience. My daughter does trampolining competively and has her first competition of the new season (and she’s moved up an age division) this coming weekend. It’ll be good to get a feel for how she’s going.
You’re the second person who has mentioned competitive trampolining. I had no idea there was such a thing. I could see Megan loving that. I’ll have to check into it. and, yes, that was my whole thought on the first meet, too. She’s got her second one in a couple of weeks. I hope she’s happier with her scores.
Trampolining is an Olympic sport. If Megan is interested there is a video of my 14 year old daughter competing at our national champs last year up on my blog – https://schoolofserendipity.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/two-weeks-ending-9-november-2014.html. No idea how it compares to the level in the US. My daughter is definitely at the B grade level – the A graders represent the country at international events and she is not at that level yet!
