Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve had an amazing week! Considering that the first two days of the week were sunny and gloriously warm, giving us all a little preview of spring, I’ll chalk this week up as amazing.

The only downside was that Brian was extremely ill this weekend. He’d taken off work just to go see Megan’s gymnastics meet, then, had to miss it because he was so sick. It wound up being a fun girls day out – just me, my girls, and my niece.

It was a gorgeous, sunny day, perfect for a drive to Atlanta. Megan was much more confident and had a good meet. She’s like me in that she’s her own worst critic, but her coach and I said it was an improvement, so we’re going with that.

Josh has been doing some driving. The shocker, for all who know us, is that Brian has been letting Josh practice in his Mustang. Hang on. I’m going to wait for everyone who knows us personally to pick themselves up out of the floor.

Everybody good? Okay. Brian’s car is a straight shift, so Josh has been mostly getting used to shifting with a little driving in an empty parking lot.

Last night, he drove Brianna’s car (the one she’s been driving, anyway) on the main roads in a slow area of town. It’s an automatic, so he was able to concentrate on driving without worrying about shifting. Brian says he’s doing really well.

Wednesday was a fun, busy day for us. We went to a local jump park for some homeschool P.E. and socialization. Then, the kids talked me into taking them to McDonald’s for awhile so they could hang out with their friends a little longer.

P.E.

From there, we rushed home to get Josh to music and Megan to gymnastics. Later, we all went out to dinner at Red Robin. That was really, really nice because we haven’t gotten to eat dinner out as a family in a long time. Brianna is either working or with her boyfriend and Megan is at gymnastics three nights a week. We actually had to pick her up early to go out, but it was worth it.

I’ll admit that there was a little sticker shock when we got the bill. We’ve been enjoying the “one or two kids aren’t with us tonight” discount when we’ve gone out to eat lately. We’d forgotten how expensive it can be to take out a family of five.

Megan asked if she could play with my camera this week. She actually got some really good shots. The photo of Gus the Second above was taken by her, too.

Notice the bright red hair in her selfie? She colored it as soon as we got home from church Sunday night. She couldn’t have it dyed unnatural colors for gymnastics meets so she’s been waiting impatiently until they were over.

The funny thing is, Brianna dyed hers a pretty bright red, too – the only difference is, hers is permanent. One of the benefits of going to cosmetology school. She wanted her hair colored and someone at school needed the practice. Win-win.

School update: My independent teens are continuing to work their way through their workbooks. Exciting, huh? Hey, at least they like it and I’ve got time to do other things during the day. It’s kind of weird.

  1. She did great with those photos! I love Gus the Second’s shot and her selfie is a really awesome shot too 🙂 Have a great week!

    1. Thanks. I thought she did a really good job, too. I may have a photographer on my hands. That would be fun, since I enjoy photography, too.

  2. Do I ever wish that we had a jump park anywhere near here! I think we’re going to have to add a trampoline this spring just to get some bouncing in.

I love that red hair, too! That’s probably the only color I never dyed mine as a teenager – they weren’t as good back in the 80s and the red cotton-candy pink on my friend within a few days, so I never dared. 🙂

    1. The jump park is awesome! Megan’s been wanting a trampoline, too, though. I’ve been considering finally giving in. We really don’t have a good spot for it, which is why I’ve resisted, but maybe we could get creative.

  3. Sounds like a great week! Love the red hair! We were in Atlanta last weekend for a dance workshop, and we ate dinner at The Varsity on our way out of town.

    1. You know, I’ve never eaten at The Varsity. I really should make a point of doing that next time I’m in Atlanta. What did you think of it?

      1. The food was just okay, but we did it to say we’d eaten there. If you go, be sure to try the Orange Freeze. It was super yummy!

    1. Thank you. He is feeling better, finally. That was a rough sickness. I’m so glad no one else had it.

  4. My daughter is starting to get more independent this year too. In a few of our subjects she’s asked if she could have something more independent next year. That is definitely a weird feeling. But I guess she is growing up.

    1. It’s a very weird feeling. It’s not without its benefits, though. I really want to take the kids to one of the bigger homeschool conventions so they can thoroughly examine their options.

    1. Yeah, we don’t usually get much of a spring either. Probably more than you, but never enough. I love spring and fall.

    1. You ought to see Brianna’s. I need to get a picture of it. Yes, the weather has been wonderful. Well, you know, until the last couple of days.

  5. I do love reading your stories of how it is homeschooling older teens – a glimpse of things to come. So pleased Megan’s gymnastics is going so well. She must be very fit and healthy! Thank you for hosting, Kris. It’s good to be back.

  6. Congratulations on the gymnastics meet!

I’m getting to the point where kids are working more independently also, and it’s a little bittersweet. I have more “free” time during the day. But I also miss us all working together. It’s just the season of life we’re moving into. 🙂
