When I’m describing a Rainbow Resource catalog a a new or non-homeschooling family (because, let’s face it, if you’ve homeschooled for any length of time, you know what a Rainbow Resource catalog is), I always call it the Sears catalog of homeschooling. Rainbow Resource, in general, is usually referred to as the Wal-mart of homeschooling because they have everything, including great prices.

12 Gift Ideas from the Rainbow Resource Christmas Catalog

Today, they’re giving you a chance to win a $100 gift card to do some Cyber Monday Christmas gift shopping at Rainbow Resource. No, I’m not talking about the kind of homeschool Christmas gift shopping where you give your kid workbooks and math manipulatives. Y’all, they have a Christmas catalog. With toys!

Following are a few suggestions (some of my favorites) to get you started.

1. Fisher Price Classics

Okay, I seriously remember from my childhood just about every toy on their Fisher Price Classics page and would love one of each. As a kid, I had the Music Box Record Player, the Pull-A-Tune Xylophone, and the Chatter Telephone. My kids are too big for all of those, but it’s never too early to start stockpiling for my future grandchildren, right?

Granted, I’ll have to explain the concept of a rotary dial telephone and a record player, but that’s beside the point.

2. Dress-Up Clothes

I love dress-up clothes that can also be part of school – like princesses dresses and knight costumes. They’re just plain old fun for the kids, but they can also be used for a medieval unit study like we did several years ago.

Rainbow Resource also sells costumes for doctors, nurses, cowboys, and superheroes.

3. Pretend Play

We used to love playing store. Rainbow Resource has this great Pretend and Play Cash Register. It even comes with play money – fun and educational! They’ve also got tools, kitchen sets, baking sets, and tons more.

4. Calico Critters

Okay, I’ve got to tell you, I had no idea what Calico Critters were until I read Angie’s post last week, but Rainbow Resource has got them, too.

5. Collectibles

Brianna used to love collecting horse figurines, much like her mother. Our favorites are the realistic Breyer Classics. As a matter of fact, some of the figures that we’ve still got are some that I got for Christmas when I was a kid.

6. Timeless Classics

In addition to the Fisher Price classics, Rainbow Resource sells other timeless classics that you’ll (if you’re my age) remember from your childhood, such as Brio Wooden Railway sets, Lincoln Logs, and Little House paper dolls.

We looked all over for Lincoln Logs for my nephew last year. I wish I’d known that my favorite source for homeschooling supplies had them.

7. Outdoor Toys

I am seriously loving this Rainbow Resource Christmas catalog. In addition to this nifty book, How to Build Treehouses, Huts & Forts (my cousin and I were constantly working on a tree house in my Papaw’s backyard when we were kids), there are more toys that I remember from my childhood. Remember Pogo Sticks and Hop ‘n Bounce balls?

8. Science Kits

Science kits probably start getting a little more schoolish, but science is also just fun. Rainbow Resource has a huge assortment including Magic School Bus science kits (love that show!), robot and circuit kits, and, for the nature lovers among us, bug vacuums and flower press kits.

9. Games

My family loves board and card games. I’ve heard about, but never tried cooperative games. Have you tried them? What would you recommend?

In addition to cooperative, educational, and card games, Rainbow Resource stocks classics, such as Pick-Up Sticks, marbles, and Jacks.  They also sell a really nice, wooden Mancala and, just for fun, one of my favorites, Whac-a-Mole.

10. Art supplies

At my house, art supplies are almost always on someone’s Christmas list. I know Brianna would love the any of the Prismacolor Manga sets. Megan would enjoy a paint-by-numbers. And, me? Well, I’m reminiscing about my childhood again with the Spirograph set. Remember those little round, toothed templates for drawing designs with colored pens? My cousins and I used to drag that out at my grandmother’s house.

11. Crafting

Crafting supplies are usually on our list, too. There are kits for making the cord jewelry and Brianna had tons of Shrinky Dinks that’s she’s made. There are also kits for Duct tape crafts and pot holders, as well as clay and knitting looms.

12. Music

We have a musician in the family, so we’ve had many Christmas gifts that have encourage that, including the drum set that Josh got a couple of years ago (the very one he’s playing as I type this). Rainbow Resource offers instruments for your budding musician such as – BoomWhackers (the kids used to love playing with those as music class), harmonicas, and even guitars.

13. Stocking Stuffers

Finally, no list of Christmas gift suggestions would be complete without some stocking stuffer ideas. The Rainbow Resource Christmas catalog has stocking stuffer suggestions sorted by price, starting as low as $1 each. In addition to those, a few things that I saw just flipping through the catalog included: Yo-Yos, juggling kits, Mad Libs, and a Slinky.

So, see? There are a whole slew of gifts (100+ pages, as a matter of fact) available from Rainbow Resource that will not leave you kids scratching their heads on Christmas morning trying to figure out what they did to deserve a math book for Christmas. Now that you’re excited about shopping, how about a little something to give you a head start? How about a $100 gift card from Rainbow Resource?

  1. I so loved my Rainbow Brite doll. But then, I also loved the play kitchen we got one year. So there are the two most memorable. I can’t pick one.

  2. The most memorable gift I received as a child was a simple stuffed bear that my grandmother from a couple of states away made for me. “Cindy Bear” became my inseparable partner in life for many years, even into high school. I still have her today (thanks to the preserving efforts of my OTHER wonderful grandmother) and my children love to look at her and remember that their mommy had a lovee once too.

  3. My most memorable gift was a Cabbage Patch Kid. I was nine, and it was the first year they were out. It was so hard to get them (almost like that movie, Jingle All the Way), but my aunt worked at Kmart and grabbed one as soon as it got off the truck. I was so happy!

  4. The most memorable Christmas was the one when I asked for (and received) a Hot Wheels race track. I had lots of “girly” toys, too, but have many fond memories of my dad and I racing cars on that track!

  5. Christmas was very simple for us – and my most memorable gift was a doll. She was loved to the point of losing all her hair(ok, maybe I cut some of it off with scissors…).

  6. I thought it was so cool when I got Return of Jafar VHS for Christmas one year. The movie was MINE not a “family” movie. I was so annoying about my siblings asking me to watch it because it was mine. haha

  7. Boy, would this be nice to win! We’re short on Christmas cash, so this would be a great way to be able to get the kids something for Christmas. Thanks so much, Kris for hosting this giveaway!

  8. I received a Polaroid camera and a photo album when I was about 11…I loved taking pictures and having them come out of my camera instantly 🙂

  9. I look forward to your posts. And can’t wait to get into the Rainbow Resource catalog!!!
    Thank you!
    * Thank you for being Weird, Home schooled, And Unsocialized. 🙂

  10. My most memorable Christmas gift would have to be the year I received a ride on pony toy. It was one of those plastic ponies attached to springs. I rode that thing until it broke from the weight! I absolutely LOVE Rainbow Resource and buy most of our homeschool supplies from them. Would love to win this as I could really use it right now. Thanks!

  11. My favorite gift that I got when I was a kid was my Barbie doll house. I played with the house for hours. I was so happy when I saw what santa got me under the tree.

  12. My most memorable Christmas gift was my Nancy Drew books. For some reason this stands out as my favorite things from childhood. Obviously, I was an avid reader and I would get about 5-10 books for Christmas and just loved it. I would spend the next several days curled up under a blanket and read all of them!

  13. The Barbie dollhouse was my favorite Christmas gift! My parents took a picture of my reaction and you can see just how shocked I was to get it. Totally unexpected gift!

  14. It’s so hard to pick the most memorable gift from my childhood. Possibly the whirlybirds that my sister and I got one Christmas. Helicopters that were attached to a wire and flew in a circle. We had controls for them and it was the hit of the Christmas with all the extended family. We played with those for years until the motors died.

  15. Every year, we got a magazine’s “annual” book. We never got the magazine, but we always knew we’d get the book at Christmas. We would swap with each other until we’d all read all of them. We all still have those books! It was nice to have one gift we always knew!

  16. Every year we each got a magazine’s annual book. It was nice to have a gift we always knew was coming…and we all still have our collection of annuals!

  17. Every year, we would all get a magazine’s “annual” book. It was nice to have a gift we always knew was coming…and we all still have our collections on annuals!

  18. My most memorable gift were some handmade barbie clothes made by my great grandma. I loved her so much and would spend hours at her house so I loved the clothes she made for my dolls.

  19. The most memorable Christmas gift I received as a child was the year I (like almost every other little girl in the 80s) got a cabbage patch kid- the little one that looked like me (blonde with blue eyes). It was memorable because we were stationed overseas at the time and I thought I’d never be able to get one, since we read in the paper about how they were so hard to find back home. But my parents got one! (Apparently they went to another, bigger base to find it) Thanks mom and dad.

  20. My most memorable childhood gift was a bike when I was 8. I really, really wanted a yellow bike with a banana seat (hey, it was the 70s and high style). I was so upset that I couldn’t find it hidden anywhere. When I snuck out to the Christmas tree at 2am to see if Santa had arrived, my bike was not there. It also wasn’t there at 3am, 4am, 5am, or 6am. I cried all morning. We went to my aunt’s for Christmas lunch and it was sitting on her porch. Evidently, “Santa” had mistakenly left it at her house. I was extremely happy but never trusted Santa’s navigation again.

  21. Ok, so in addition to linking up I’m leaving a comment. LOL . To be honest I just learned about Rainbow Resource this year (from you actually) and I’m intrigued.

  22. One year my parents got my sister & me phones that actually worked – walkie talkie style. We would play for hours with those things. She’s still the only one I like to talk on the phone to. 🙂

  23. My best Christmas gift wasn’t a what, but rather a who. My grandparents (that I got to see once or twice a year) drove over 10 hours to our house when I was 5 or 6 years old. They were not at our house on Christmas Eve when I went to bed, but they were when I woke up on Christmas Day. They were the best Christmas gift ever:)

  24. My uncle gave me a Sony Walkman one year. We usually got homemade gifts, so that was a huge surprise. It still works! My favorite homemade gift was a little doll; my daughter plays with her now.

  25. Not a present I got but I love the year we bought two paint ponies on Christmas Eve after our youngest said she dreamed we told her to look outside and when she did we had gotten her a pony for Christmas.

  26. My favorite childhood Christmas gift was a Magical Musical Thing. It was a long, battery operated toy that had buttons that played music notes when pushed. It came with a song book, and I would spend hours toting it around and playing for everyone. We couldn’t afford real music instruments or lessons, so this was wonderful! I still talk about it with my children =)

  27. I’ve already done some of my Christmas shopping from Rainbow Resources. I LOVE their Christmas Catalog and they have better prices than even Amazon! The Laser Maze game is at the top of my son’s Christmas List.

  28. My most memorable Christmas gift as a child was a black stuffed dog. I slept with that dog until I was married (and occasionally after, when my husband was traveling). It’s actually sitting on my desk right now because my daughter plays with it now and she brought it to me for a repair.

  29. I think my most memorable Christmas gift was a hope chest I received in my teens. Still have it and still use it.

  30. my sisters were always more memorable she got a keyboard when we were in highschool. and a tickle me elmo that we still talk about when we were little. I don’t really remember any of mine.

  31. My favorite Christmas gift is the ornament my son made for me when he was 3. Seeing that little handprint just brings back all the memories of him being so cute and little. Just 5 years later his hands are almost the same size as mine!!

  32. My most memorable Christmas gift was a Baby Heather Doll that spoke, moved her head and mouth and that was broken before the New Year by my younger brothers. We got to return it for another though!

  33. My most memorable present was contact lenses. I hated my glasses, but needed them to see. It was a big deal to get contacts, for me. Loved it.

  34. A bike! Also, I just want to say, I love Rainbow Resources! And I’ve bought from their Christmas catalog before and love it as well!!

  35. My most memorable gift was a cd player. I used that thing so much. My parents probably still have it hidden in their basement somewhere.

  36. So many years of Christmas … I was just thinking about the record player I got one year, with the Arthur Fiedler/Boston Pops album with the “1812 Overture.” Wasn’t a toy, and maybe not the most memorable, but it is the one that I thought of most recently from my childhood. Whenever my dad hears the “1812 Overture,” he plays it as loud as he can get away with, so there’s a strong memory of my dad linked to this music.

  37. Unfortunately, my most memorable gift wasn’t what I was hoping for that year. I so desperately wanted a Cabbage Patch Doll and told my parents repeatedly. Christmas day came and we were with my grandparents for our gift exchanging time. I opened a package from them and inside was a homemade, handsewn, stuffed doll that was supposed to be like a Cabbage Patch. It wasn’t, and I sadly was quite disappointed. Looking back now, I can appreciate the love with which the gift was given.

  38. You did say most memorable. My most memorable Christmas gift was a huge, thick, ankle length Barney-the-Dinosaur-purple coat. I was 13, lived in Florida, and hated the color purple. So yeah…blech. But it was given to me by my grandmother, who was staying with us at the time. I will never forget it even though I never used it. 🙂

    Michelle

  39. My most memorable gift would probably be a CD player with a CD, that was almost 19 years ago and I still have them both! Working!

      1. Probably not one I would let my kids have at that age, but it’s what I got nonetheless! It was Ace of Base, I saw the Sign, because my older cousin listened to that music and I wanted to be like her!

  40. My favorite Christmas gift was a stuffed monkey that I named Georgette. I loved Curious George but at 5 years old, I couldn’t bear the thought of a toy with a yucky boy name! She traveled everywhere with us throughout my school years and I still have her today at 40 something.

    Merry Christmas to you all!

    1. I’ve got a monkey that I got for Christmas when I was three. His name is Monkey. I guess I was a pretty creative 3 year old. He was mercilessly attacked (I might have been a bit dramatic, too) by my aunt’s dog when I was about 6. She repaired him for me with some Hawaiian print fabric, a tube sock (think: sleeveless turtleneck vest over a long-sleeve Hawaiian print shirt) and blue jeans. I’ve still got him. 🙂

  41. Gosh, there are so many, but one of my favorites was the Sunshine Family farm (late 70s). 🙂 It had a chicken that laid eggs and a cow that you could milk (water).

  42. Without a doubt, it was the year I received a Cabbage Patch doll. I was sure I wasn’t going to get one and I have no idea what my mom did to get me one. But I loved that doll to pieces!

  43. My most memorable gift was when I was four and received a cardboard grocery store. I think all of the neighborhood kids found groceries at that store…

  44. My most memorable Christmas gift was a GIANT teddy bear, about 3 – 4 feet tall. I kept asking for a teddy bear, and I got one — the biggest my parents could find!

  45. My most memorable gift was a Cabbage Patch Preemie doll the first year they came out from my dad. My parents got divorced that year and it was nice to think that even though we only saw him four days a month he paid attention to what I liked . I still have the doll today.

  46. My favorite Christmas gift was….um….is it sad that I can’t really think of any? I remember going to grandparents’ houses, playing in the snow (or rain after moving to Seattle), and Christmas programs at church.

  47. My most memorable Christmas gift as a child was a wooden desk with hinges. The writing surface of the desk lifted up to a storage space. It came with a large sturdy chair. I had that until a few years ago.

  48. Best gift as a child? Barbie Doll dream house. I was 8 and I still remember so clearly! And that was, ahem, 20 years ago!

  49. I received a build-it-yourself doll house. It was the biggest box under the tree and it was for ME!!! With ten kids in the family, that meant something! 🙂 Never did completely finish it, but the entire family helped get the house going.

  50. Favorite gifts… Barbie dream house and the Holly Hobby Gazebo… I read the comment on monkey names and it made me laugh… my 3 yr old just got a new doll she named Michael… she refers to him (the doll) as a her all the time and dresses the doll in pink and purple… such fun being little 😉

  51. LOVE LOVE LOVE Rainbow Resource!
Best gift as a child….a GIANT sized set of Tinker Toys! Awesome forts were built for YEARS with those things!

  52. My most memorable Christmas gift? Probably my Cabbage Patch Kid and her horse when I was young. Either that, or the entire Rocky set on VHS when I was in high school. Haha.

  53. What a great prize! Rainbow resource is wonderful. As for a memorable gift….hmm…it would probably have to be the cabbage patch doll that were so hard to find back in the day. 🙂

  54. I had so many great Christmas gifts as a child. I was a spoiled only child. 🙂 The first thing that came to mind was a coat I received when I was 10. It was made from a shiny metallic fabric. I felt like an astronaut. It had a fluff trimmed hood. It was awesome.

  55. I just found this company this year & I am so glad I did. They are incredible! my only complaint is I didn’t find them sooner!

  56. One year my parents built a dollhouse for me. Each shingle was glued on separately, and it had tile, carpet, and wall paper. I will never forget the effort they put into making that special gift!

  57. I still remember my first doll house. White with pink shutters, and a pink door that my little brother immediately removed from its hinges.

  58. This would be an amazing prize to win! My girls have already gone through the Christmas Catalog and highlighted all the things that they want! LOVE this!

  59. My most memorable was actually a microscope kit I received when I was about 10. I was more excited about growing the brine shrimp that came with it!

  60. I remember getting matching lamps with my sister – not a great gift but memorable. My favorite is the year my parents got me a new softball catchers mitt and directions on how to break it in.

  61. My favorite Christmas gift of all time- my big wheel! I can still remember being a little girl and finding that under the tree. Sweet!!!

  62. My favorite Christmas was probably my coin collection getting started. Love rainbow resources and know that winning this would be a help for making some great memories with my son for Christmas.

  63. One of my most memorable Christmas gifts was getting all of the Strawberry Shortcake dolls when I was 7. I also loved getting drawing paper and fresh markers and crayons every year.

  64. When I was young, my dad was laid off of work around Christmas time. Our church had collected food for our family and gave my parents some extra money for Christmas. The only gift we got that year was an animal puppet. It was a lean year but one of the most memorable. Just goes to show that we don’t have to give our kids a big Christmas for it to be memorable. To this day, I still have that raccoon puppet.

    1. I was just thinking about that last night. We’ve had some lean Christmases – probably not as lean as what you described, but enough that I felt sure my kids were going to be disappointed. They never were. Every year my youngest tells me, “This was the best Christmas ever.” It always makes me smile to hear that.

  65. I got a science experiment kit that contained all kinds of real chemicals and REAL experiments… it was awesome to have that at home not just at school.

  66. My most memorable gift was the year my family was starting a church in S. TX. We were going supported by a mission’s board. Needless to say, money was very tight that year. A women’s mission society sent us a care package that had all kinds of goodies in it, including toys. Nothing fancy or expensive, but to us, that package was God sent.

  67. Most memorable Christmas gift I received was my Mother’s ring (from my husband)! The first piece of jewelry he ever picked out for me!! I wear it every day!

As a child, my most memorable gift was a stuffed white kitty pajama bag. (Anyone old enough to remember pajama bags?) I had seen it in the Sears catalog, and it was at the top of my list. Coming downstairs in the morning with my brothers, there was that white kitty sitting under the tree! ^_^

  68. My most memorable present was a doll that looked kind of like me. I took her everywhere and now my kids play with her (though she is pretty beat up now!)

  69. I’ve had so many wonderful gifts from my parents – the best was probably a skidder. My dad was a logger and I wanted a red Timberjack skidder, which they didn’t exactly sell for children to play with. He bought a John Deere and painted it red.

  70. What a great giveaway! I don’t really have a memorable Christmas gift from my childhood, sadly. But from adulthood my favorite was Alaskan native jewelery.

  71. My most memorable gift as a child was definitely a camera. I wore that thing out! Photography is still a passion and side-job of mine. I would love a gift card to get my kids some new supplies from Rainbow Resource!

  72. We had some lean times for sure, but one year I remember getting Strawberry Shortcake and her house! I loved the smell of her hair 🙂 and my twin sister got one of her friends so we played with them together!

  73. Had to laugh, because a math book is one of the things ds8 requested for Xmas! Beast Academy will be his come Christmas morning, but we are still on the lookout for other more “giftty” type things as well. We love Rainbow Resource!

  74. We didn’t do Christmas gifts – I did love being home from school and having my parents home from work, though – so I suppose those were special gifts.

  75. One of my most memorable gifts as a child was a Hot Wheel, that unfortunately was stolen a few weeks later:-( Maybe that’s why it was memorable:-)

  76. One year, I dreamed of receiving a porcelain doll. Not the blonde, blue eyed type with a child’s face and a grownups dress. I wanted one that looked like my mom(but with victorian clothing). On Christmas morning I was thrilled to receive a beautiful brunette with curly hair and brown eyes, just like my mom’s. I still have her in my curio cabinet.

  77. I had a chalkboard. It was probably 4ft x 3ft on a stand and it was double sided. I spent hours on that chalkboard. I wish I still had it! My girls would love it.

  78. My most memorable Christmas gifts was a fisher price little people castle – the original one with the dragon, moving secret stairway door, dungeon, etc..

  79. I remember getting a Puddin’ doll when I was about three and a few years later, it was Joey Stivic. I loved babies.

  80. My most memorable Christmas gift was a handwritten note in a card that said I would be getting a real horse later that year. It was such an exciting wait.

  81. I remember getting a pony when I was five. He was already part of the family, but that Christmas he became mine. His name was Starlight.

  82. The one I remember most is the huge handmade dollhouse my grandparents made for me. I am about ready to rehab it for my own daughter.

  83. One year my Dad gave all 7 of us kids long john tops and bottoms with our names on the backs, that he had written in black marker, tied in a black garbage bag……We always fought over who’s were who’s !

  84. I love Rainbow Resource. I feel like I am ordering something every couple months. I wish I was better organized and just order everything at once!

  85. My favorite thing I received as a child was a rock tumbler. I loved rocks and polishing them was such a treat. I’m still fascinated with rocks and now my DD is too!

  86. One of my most memorable Christmas gifts was a cabbage patch doll. I thought it was cool that it came with a name and a birth certificate!

  87. My first, and only Cabbage Patch kid is high on the list, but the top present has to be the early Christmas present I received almost 8 years ago – my son, born 11 days before Christmas.

  88. My most memorable gift was the “Jumpin Jimminie Trampoline” I had wanted for years. There was a note (in my dad’s terrible handwriting) apologizing for the inner tube not being blown up and promising my dad would get it done on Christmas Day. The note was signed from Santa.

  89. My Grandma made homemade cabbage patch kid dolls for all the girl grandchildren one year. Best present ever! I wish I still had mine.

  90. It’s a tie between a fabric rag doll my mom made me, or a beatuiful baked clay angel candle holder my grandmother had given me. Unfortunately the rag doll is long gone, but I still have the angel which sits on a shelf in my kitchen. BTW, love the this drawing for Rainbow Resources. If I buy any homeschool curriculum, this is one of my favorite go to resources. Happy Holidays!!!

  91. I received a dollhouse that my uncle made for me. He also made one for a cousin that I was very close to. It was wooden and very detailed. I still have it!

  92. I distinctly remember getting a Barbie Castle. One year I got a cat snow globe music box that I really really wanted.

  93. My most memorable gift was probably my American girl doll. Every year my grandma would give me another accessory from her collection, and now I’ve passed it all down to my daughter.

  94. I think it was the year I got a 10 speed with the racing handle bars — part of the fun was my dad was waiting for me to go to sleep so he could go to my aunt and uncles and get the bike.

  95. An original Nintendo! I remember Christmas morning – spending hours playing Super Mario Brothers and trading off with my cousin because you couldn’t save your game! You could only pause it. We had to turn it off at night (had to start all over again – what a shame!) – so I think it was the 3rd day when we finally beat all the levels.

  96. I too, collected breyer horses (and uhm.. still do , for my daughter , yea , that’s it .. im collecting them for her 😉 ) but my most memorable xmas gift was sadly, not the pony/horse I asked for every year , but riding lessons (close enough!)

  97. Three months before Christmas one year my dad would come home from work and go in his bedroom and close the door. I kept wondering what he was doing. Christmas morning I woke up and there was the largest dollhouse my child eyes had ever seen. I always told my dad I was going to have a white house with blue shutters and a second floor balcony. This dollhouse was just that. And to make it even more magical he decorated it for Christmas with lights and everything! I learned that morning what he had been doing for those 3 months. That year forget Santa my dad was magical!

  98. My most memorable gift was a Get in Shape Girl set with a pink exercise mat! I didn’t use it for exercise very much, but I put it in the bottom of my closet and ran a gooseneck lamp in there to make myself a really cozy reading nook.

  99. My most memorable Christmas was spent 500 miles away from home at the age of 8 with all my aunts, uncles and cousins in Tennessee.
