Even as a teen I looked forward to the Sunday comics – because I loved those “spot the differences” games! My mom and I would race to see who could find all the differences first.

Now, thanks to Dover Publications, I can combine the fun (and friendly competition) of that old comic strip game with art study. The Spot the Differences Art Masterpiece Mysteries will add a whole new level of fun to your artist study.

Painless Artist Study Spot the Differences Books

Painless artist study idea

Each Spot the Differences book features 25 of the most famous paintings in the world. Each is covered in a two-page spread, side-by-side with the same painting. Except, well, it’s not exactly the same. The doctored image features 6-14 subtle additions. Can you spot the differences?

Some are obvious, but others are really tricky and require careful observation, which is just to ticket to get kids of all ages carefully studying each masterpiece. Even my typically skeptical 15-year-old thought they were fun.

Each page also features the painting’s title, artist, and the year it was painted, along with fun facts about the artist and his (or her) painting.

The Spot the Difference book will make a fun addition to your regular artist study or, if you’re like me, a great excuse to start a regular artist study. They’re also a fun, educational activity for waiting rooms or travel.

There are currently four books in the series featuring artists such as:

  • Leonardo da Vinci
  • Paul Cézanne
  • Vincent Van Gogh
  • Peter Paul Rubin
  • Pierre-Auguste Renoir
  • Mary Cassatt
  • Edgar Degas
  • Claude Monet
  • Winslow Homer
  • John Trumbull

Each Spot the Differences book is only $9.99.

Who are some of your favorite artists to study? And, I’ve got to know, who loves spot-the-difference activities as much as I do?
