My family recently had the opportunity to try out Gymathics, by Exploramania.  Gymnathics is billed as being an “interactive math and exercise experience.”  This 30-minute DVD combines math with exercise to get kids moving while improving their math skills.

According the Exploramania’s website, “research shows exercise releases neural growth factors in the brain developing connections and improving memory.”  To that end, the Exploramania folks have created Gymathics, which includes:

  • Shape Stretches Warm Up — Kids stretch and warm up with activities like rotating their arms in congruent circles.
  • Counting Calisthenics — Kids will learn counting concepts, such as odd numbers while getting fit.
  • Pattern Power — Strengthen muscles with these pattern exercises.
  • Well-Being Wind Down — Cool down while considering healthy choices for body and mind.

Although my younger two kids are in the target age-range, 2nd – 5th grade, they found the program cheesy.  I’m not sure if it’s because they are used to Bob and Jillian (Biggest Loser) yelling at people while they work out or if my kids are essentially lazy.  That’s pretty much a toss up.

However, the concept is a good one. So, if you’d like your kids to get fit and strengthen their math knowledge in a gentler way than having Jillian screaming, “Unless you’re passed out, puking, or dying, keep walking,” Gymathics might be the right fit for your family.  The DVD costs $24.99 and free shipping is currently being offered.
