Donde vamos? Donde vamos? Donde, no lo sé.

Do you know what I just said? If you speak Spanish, you do…or, if you’ve been watching Speekee TV like the kids and I have been.

Speekee is an adorable, affordable foreign language program that teaches Spanish to young children through catchy songs (that get stuck in your head so that you sing them over and over) and entertaining videos featuring actual Spanish children visiting a variety of locations in Spain.

I’ve always heard that immersion is the best way to teach and learn a foreign language and you get that with Speekee. Everything is in Spanish with subtitles in both Spanish and English, so that kids (well, those who are reading) and their parents know what’s being said, but they’re hearing it only in Spanish and getting the concept based on the setting.

My youngest two are 11 and 9. Josh (11) thought it was too babyish, but he wasn’t really complaining about watching it. Megan and I thought it was cute. Some of it was a little young for Megan, according to her, but I think she was being unfairly influenced by a big brother and trying to look cool in front of him. I’d say that a good range for Speekee is about 10 and under.

Speekee Spanish Review

Speekee TV, the online option we chose, contains 10 videos, each about 15-20 minutes in length, featuring Speekee, the Spanish speaking puppet. Joining Speekee are his puppet friends, Lupi and Dino, his real-life friend, Jim, and lots of real Spanish kids, which is great because you get to hear the words spoken with an authentic accent. That’s a little different than Spanish spoken with a Southern accent, just in case you wondered.

In addition to the engaging videos and catchy songs, there are worksheets that you can download to reinforce the lessons and enrichment ideas suggested with each episode.

Classical-style home educating moms will appreciate the repetition of the songs at the beginning and end of each episode, knowing the grammar-stage kids thrive on memorization and repetition.

Review of Speekee Spanish

The only aspect to Speekee that might be a negative for North American users is that what is being taught is Spanish Spanish, not Mexican Spanish. I’m pretty sure there’s a more accurate way to say that, but you probably know what I mean. I think the difference is that what we usually hear around here is Latin American Spanish. I think.

We’ve noticed a few differences in what Josh and Megan and learning on Speekee versus what Brianna is learning in her Spanish class, but I don’t think it’s enough to really be a big deal.

Sound like something you’d like to try? You can try it free for two-weeks, just cancel your subscription within the first two weeks if you don’t like what you see. If you do enjoy Speekee, it’s only $7.50 per month to continue.
