As I was cleaning out my garage recently, I found our big bucket of sidewalk chalk. That bucket of chalk reminded me of a photo project I’ve been wanting to do with Emma.

Sidewalk Chalk Photo Shoot

For quite a while, I’ve been wanting to do a sidewalk chalk photo shoot with Emma and her friends! Have you seen this idea on Pinterest?  I have been pinning ideas for a while, but our schedules have just been too hectic to pencil it in on my calendar. This weekend, however, I found myself with absolutely nothing on the calendar. What better time to do a fun photo shoot with Em and her bestie!

The idea is really easy! Draw some large pictures on the sidewalk or driveway with chalk. Make sure you use your brightest colors. There were a few “smoky” colors in our bucket that didn’t show up.

I chose to do an umbrella, a bunch of balloons, and an outer space theme. I also did an “I <3 her” and a trail of hearts. Once I had all the drawing done (the girls didn’t want to help me draw), it was time to start taking pictures.

The girls had fun working together to get the poses right. Figuring out how to position your hand so that it looks like it’s holding something is probably the hardest part of the whole project.

Well, maybe the bright sun is a bit harder to manage. Next time, we’ll try to do it on an overcast day so that the kids can actually keep their eyes open. I got quite a few squinty-eyed pictures that day.

I’ve already got plans to do another photo shoot like this next month at Emma’s birthday party. In the meantime, I’ll be pinning more great ideas to my Sidewalk Chalk Photo Shoot board on Pinterest.

Have you done any sidewalk chalk photos? What tips would you add? Feel free to link to your photo shoot if you have a blog post about it!

  1. What a great idea! I have been looking for some things to do this summer with my daughter and her friend (who I have agreed to keep an eye on). I wouldn’t want those girls to get bored 🙂 We will be trying this!

  2. I have seen this so many times on Pinterest but have yet to do it! Looks so fun – we will have to try it this summer 🙂

  3. I just showed this to my 15 year old daughter. She is providing part-time care for 2 kids this summer and this looks like it would be really fun for them. Thanks!
