Weekly Wrap-Up

It’s hard to believe another week has come and gone and that we’re less than two weeks away from Thanksgiving. It seems that my life has become a blur. Even Megan commented yesterday that she can’t believe how fast this month has gone by. We’ve only got one more week of school before we’re off for the rest of the year. We’re all pretty excited about that!

I do have some plans for some fun, not-so-formal learning kinds of things for us to do in December. Did you see my post yesterday about the Christmas chalk pastels book and the Christmas Around the World unit study or the one Monday with our middle school reading list? Yeah, I’ve got plans for our Christmas break. Don’t tell my kids, though.

Do you remember me telling you about “Not Gus,” the orange tabby that showed up in our neighborhood a few weeks ago? He hung around our house almost constantly for a week or so, but we’ve just seen him occasionally since then. I think Megan was pretty accurate when she determined that he’s the neighborhood cat.

I’d been thinking about him a lot this week. He’s not Gus, but he reminds me of him and he’s a sweet cat and, well, I missed him because he hadn’t been around in 2 or 3 weeks. When we got to my sister’s for dinner last night (she lives in my neighborhood), he was sitting on her front porch. We all petted him and loved on him a bit before going inside.

When we left, I was putting some things in the back of my car, including a pet crate I had let my sister borrow for their new puppy. Josh noticed “Not Gus” sitting in the middle of the road. On impulse I picked him up and stuck him in the pet crate, expecting him to protest. He didn’t. At all.

So, we brought him home with us. We enjoyed fussing over him and loving on him last night. He didn’t seem to mind the attention one bit. We joked a bit about being cat-nappers, but really he shows up at our house on his own all the time, so if he belongs to someone, I figure he’ll head back to their house soon.

While we’re on the cat theme, I’ve got to tell you about the letter we got from our Compassion International sponsor child yesterday. In a previous letter, he’d told me about his cat, so I sent pictures of Lily and Luna. Nathan said he was happy to see picture of Lily and Luna. He said they were “very healthy,” which we found highly amusing because Luna is fat.

Then he said that Lily looks like his cat, so he’s going to name his cat Lily. Isn’t that sweet?

Last weekend was Brianna’s anime (Japanese animation) conference. She had two different cosplays (costume play = dressing up as anime characters). I was so proud of her because she had been working on them for months.

She made both costumes herself, sewing most of the pieces and altering others. She even ordered the blue wig and colored contacts. She even made the little stuffed animal thing (it’s not a snowman) she’s holding in the one photo.

We are eagerly awaiting the premiere of Catching Fire, the second Hunger Games movie, next weekend. We probably won’t go see it right away since Brianna works at the theater and has to work all of premiere weekend. We’ll probably go see it the following week.

I finally decided to let Megan watch Hunger Games. She’s probably watched it 3 or 4 times this week. Even Josh liked that one, so it will be fun to all go see a movie. Plus, we’ve still got to go see Thor. We didn’t get a chance to go this week.

Those are the highlights for us this week since school was pretty much the same old, same old.

  1. We’ve had a tough week with my mum’s cat, who has been acting very peculiarly all week. Mum hasn’t been able to sleep with worry thinking if she did Lois (the cat) would die. The vets can’t find anything wrong and put it down to a virus but he’s incontinent, can’t walk straight, not eating…he’s only thee years old so they are worrying symptoms. He is going to have a body scan if he doesn’t pick up soon. The things our animals put us through.
Brianna’s costume and wig is amazing! I might just have to buy a wig like that of my own just for fun. You know, for around the house!!

    1. Poor Lois. I hope they can figure out what’s wrong with him. We get so attached to our creatures. And, yes, you totally need a blue wig for around the house. 🙂

    1. Oh, that’s funny. I never thought about the Harry Potter connection with the cats’ names. I hadn’t seen the movies or read the books when we named them. Now I’ll have to see if I can come up with a Harry-Potter-themed name for “Not Gus.”

  2. It’s so funny. Your daughter would get along GREAT with my 14 year old. My daughter also goes to anime conventions all the time, and she LOVES Dr. Who. Sometimes while we’re out walking, she’ll start going on and on about a new anime she’s watching or about a Dr. Who episode. To be honest, I wouldn’t know the first doctor from the fourth doctor (is there a fourth yet?????), so it’s very hard for me to pay attention to these conversations, but I enjoy the time together.

    1. I think they’re on the 10th Doctor, but I could totally be wrong. I know I’ve heard Brianna say something about a 10th, but I don’t know if that’s her favorite, the current, or an upcoming. I am clueless. 🙂

  3. Love it! Great shots!!!

    Great post….

I have a link to a HG party we threw here last year and this week, I’ll be psoting a catching Fire cake recipe…Girl on Fire Cake…SO easy and looks beautiful..we did it for my son’s bday party…link to party with pics in my post down toward the bottom.

Thanks for sharing and for hosting, Kris!!
    Take care

  4. Brianna looks so cool! She is very talented! We’re eagerly awaiting Catching Fire too. My daughter had planned on going to see it for her birthday today but unfortunately she’ll have to wait a week. I’m sure it will be worth, it though 🙂

  5. I absolutely love your link up! Looks like you had a great week! I was just thinking I need to re-watch the Hunger Games so that I can convince hubby to escape on a date to see the newest movie!!

  6. Your daughter did a great job on the costumes!

We are looking forward to Catching Fire also. I still haven’t read the books, but my daughter has, and I took her and my son to see the first one.

  7. Hi Kris,
That cat is super cute and I would probably have a hard time not letting it hang out at my house too. 😉
Your daughter is quite creative and I could totally see the stuffed anime wasn’t a snowman!

  8. My daughter is also in to anime and cosplaying. She attended the two big anime conventions in Atlanta this year, Momocon and AWA. Your daughter did a great job on her costumes. Unfortunately neither of us sew.
    Blessings
    Diane
