Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! Did you have a great week? I hope all of my U.S. friends had a safe and happy 4th. Most of my 4th of July weekend – from Saturday night to Tuesday night – was spent trying to calm a terrorized dog.

I’ve had dogs all my life and I’ve never seen a dog as scared of fireworks as Belle. Sunday night, the people down the street set off tons of huge, loud fireworks. Belle was outside when the first one went off. (I was trying to let all the dogs take care of their business before the fireworks started. I didn’t time it well, apparently.)

The calming music didn’t really help.

I seriously thought she was going to break the glass in our storm door trying to get in. Once inside, she shot up the stairs and under our bed. When Brianna got home, Belle moved from under my bed to under Brianna’s where she stayed until 3 in the morning.

Is anyone else fascinated by mushrooms?

Peanut, on the other hand, went outside and hardly even glanced up at the sky. It was odd seeing how drastically different they reacted. On Tuesday, a friend gave me some stress-relieving chews for dogs to try. They seemed to help. Belle still preferred to be under the bed, but she wasn’t completely terrified and did come out a few times to see her people before going back into hiding.

I did get some school planning done this week. Yay me! Okay, it was super minimal planning, but still. I got out my pretty new planner and mapped out our school calendar for the year.

We’re not starting until August 21 this year. That is so late for us. That’s just how packed our summer has been, though. And, really, some of what the kids are doing this summer will be credit for school – like Megan’s driving class.

She drove us to Brian’s parents’ house for 4th of July dinner. Yikes! (She did fine.)

Yesterday, Josh and Megan went rafting with our church youth group. Megan has gone every year she’s been in youth. This is the first time Josh has ever wanted to go. There may or may not have been a girl who influenced that decision. {ahem}

Those are the highlights of our rather low-key holiday week. I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend. I hope you have a great one!

  1. Aww! Poor. Belle! I remember when I was growing up that our dog used to be terrified of them. Our 4th of July weekend was also low-key. We cooked out and just watched the city fireworks from our porch. Unfortunately, they’re getting hard to see because the trees are getting too high. I guess next year we’ll have to venture to the stadium where they set them off. My kids will love it as they’ve never been there. I’m not looking forward to it. It gets really crowded, so it’ll be hard to keep my kids together. Anyway. Have a great weekend!

    1. We used to live right next door to a small amusement park. We’d sit on our front porch to watch their amazing fireworks show – for free and without the crowds. Those are some great memories.

  2. Yay for planning! Boo for scared dogs … our dogs barked all during all of the fireworks but never tried to hide.

  3. A girl may or may not have influenced someone in my house to sign up to help with VBS this year. {ahem} LOL

  4. Mushrooms are, indeed, fascinating. I have some growing on an old stump out front!

Your homeschool planner looks great! I was suppose to start pulling together lesson plans this week…. I did, however, field the calendar to gauge our start-time and collect their books in one spot (last week)… does that count?

Thanks for continuing to host this weekly link-up, I always look forward to it!
    Have a great week!

  5. We had a Greyhound that was absolutely terrified of thunderstorms, fireworks and gusty wind. If only he just hid under a bed! He would pant, whine and pace so much I thought he was going to have a heart attack! Our vet prescribed valium for him. It seemed to help some, but not for thunderstorms that popped up in the middle of the night since it takes an hour to kick in. If we knew ahead of time, we could give it to him before the storm/fireworks, but then once the event was over I felt badly he was so groggy. We also tried melatonin to no avail. Belle may benefit from a Thunder Shirt. You can buy one online and it is supposed to help calm them using gentle pressure/tightness. Our Grey’s phobia was too much for a t-shirt to handle. 😉

Anyhow, we spent our 4th in Delaware on the Indian River Bay where we caught fireworks out over the water. Low key, but fun with the family.

I’ve read your blog in the past and had it saved as a bookmark, but hadn’t stopped by for a while. Glad you had a nice holiday with your family!

    1. Thanks, Dee. We’ve looked at the Thundershirts. We may buy one if her fear continues. As it is, right now thunder makes her very anxious since all the fireworks. It didn’t really before, so I’m hoping she’ll figure out that not every rumble means fireworks. If not, she’ll probably be sporting a Thundershirt.

  6. Poor Belle! Our Boomer was really afraid more than usual of the fireworks. He laid at the top of the stairs as far from all windows as possible.
    Blessings, Dawn
