Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I don’t know about where you live, but it was fall here at the beginning of the week and now it’s winter. Brrr! The highs have only been in the upper 30’s.  Yesterday afternoon, I went outside to feed our outside dog. He was shivering and his teeth were chattering so loudly I could hear them.

He was still licking the remnants of food out of his bowl when I had the car out of the garage, a heater warming it up, and some blankets for him to lie on so he could come in out of the cold. Shortly thereafter, all 50+ pounds of him were curled up in Josh’s lap. Big baby.

This week in science we’ve been learning about the nervous system. I kind of wish I’d timed it a bit better so we could have just started the human anatomy unit in January since we only have one week left until our winter break. That’s okay, though. I run our school, so I’ll just plan a review in January and then we’ll dive in and have some fun.

We also stared a quick read through of the first chapter of The History of the Ancient World as a bit of review since we’ve already covered a lot of those topics. The jury is still out on the book. It’s not as readable as Story of the World and the activity book is pretty much just comprehension questions and map exercises. I miss the literature suggestions and hands-on activities of the Story of the World activity book. Who says older kids can’t learn through hands-on projects?

The kids have been working on biographies this week. They both enjoyed this assignment for two reasons: 1) they were able to choose someone they were interested in to write about and 2) the goal for this assignment was to be concise – it wasn’t supposed to be more than 5 sentences long.

In other exciting news, Brianna got a new job. Are you ready? She’ll be working for Chick-Fil-A! Is that not perfect, considering how often our family eats there? She’s really excited and should start sometime within the next couple of weeks.

It looks as if Megan may be ready to compete in some gymnastics meets in January, so we’ll be ordering her competition leotard next week. She’ll also be looking for employment so she can help pay for it since it is, as far as I can tell from the price, made of gold. (I’m kidding. Mostly.)

Megan is going out of town for the weekend with the youth group from church. Josh decided not to go this time, but Brianna is working, so I’m trying to figure out how Brian and I can squeeze in a date night. I may just let Josh have a friend over and get them a pizza. I love having older kids.

Speaking of older kids, it blows my mind that in less than a month, Josh will be going to take the test to get his learner’s permit. The idea of him driving terrifies me – mostly just because I can’t believe he’s old enough already. I honestly suspect that he’s going to be a very good driver.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I’ll be starting the countdown to our winter break. And, just a heads-up – there won’t be a Weekly Wrap-Up the day after Thanksgiving (November 28, for all my international friends).

Finally, one last public service announcement: I’ve had to delete several posts from the Weekly Wrap-Up link-up lately. Please review the guidelines before linking up if you’re not sure your post is appropriate for this particular link-up. Thanks!

  1. It’s got chilly over here, but I love this time of year, all toasty warm in front of a log burning stove in our cottage, watching Castle (new series finally out on DVD this week!). Life doesn’t get much better!
I didn’t know Susan Bauer had brought out another book. Have you finished using Diana Waring’s curriculum? What did you think? We’re using Home school in the Woods after Christmas and I’m looking forward to not having so much work to do planning everything myself.
Have a great weekend and enjoy your date!

    1. We haven’t finished Diana Waring’s curriculum, but we’re going to have to do some tweaking. My kids really don’t like the project week. I guess because we haven’t been doing project-based learning all alone, they’re at a bit of a loss as to what to do those weeks, despite input from me. They have both said they’d like more direction. So, I’m trying to figure out how to tweak it and maybe weave the two together.

I’m happy for you that you finally got the last season of Castle. No spoilers from me, but the episode this past week may just have been the best Castle ever. Something to look forward to. 😉

  2. I live in GA too and YES it is COLD! I’ve been reading your blog for at least 3 years and your children seem to have grown up FAST in that time. Although it was only 3 years ago, they were, to me, still like little kids…not anymore… 🙂 God bless you and your family always.

  3. It has gotten so cold here too! I’m not sure I like it.

Congratulations on the Chick Fil A job. My oldest is applying there, and we really would like her to be able to get a job there.

We are getting ready to start meet season also with our competitive gymnast. This will be her third season. It is VERY expensive and very time consuming, but we always have lots of fun. 🙂

  4. It’s downright cold here too! Personally, I think if it’s going to be this cold that I should at least have some fluffy white stuff on the ground. Not a lot of people agree with me, but just my two cents 🙂

Congratulations to Megan for starting the competition season in January. I have a competitive gymnast too and our first week is on Dec. 20th! And I hear you about the Leo’s, not enough material for the price they cost, but they do look oh so beautiful. My daughter is an optional gymnast, level 8, and they get a new Leo every year to debut at the State meet in March/April…le.t’s just say I start putting a little bit of money away each month starting in August.

    And yay for Chick-Fil-A!!!
