Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve had an amazing week! It’s been a big week for us. Josh got his driver’s license and has had his first solo drive. It’s exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time.

His first solo outing was to church for youth band practice. As nervous as we were to let him go, Brian and I are both really going to appreciate him being able to get there on his own. It’s 13 miles one way and practice usually lasts a couple of hours, plus he and his friends usually like to hang out before and/or after.

That equates to 3 or 4 hours, total, meaning two trips or a long wait for either Brian or me.

When he came home from practice, I asked him how it was driving himself. Before he could answer, Brian replied that it was just like all those other times Josh’s has driven. I quickly disagreed. I bet I’m not the only one who distinctly remembers the excitement, nerves, and feeling of independence that came with that first drive alone. Do you remember yours?

Getting his license made for a very long day Wednesday, though. We thought that the driver’s ed course that he took covered the required drug and alcohol awareness program. It did not.

Earlier this week, I was reflecting on how far my “getting ready” music has come since the days when, as a teenager, I listened to a gigantic boom box that took up half the bathroom counter.

The ladies at the department of driver services were so nice. Seriously. I told them they were ruining the reputations of DMV employees everywhere – they were way too nice. The let him go ahead and take his road test, then, he came home and spent the rest of the afternoon doing the online drug and alcohol course.

He passed it, we downloaded his certificate, and headed back to the DMV (technically, it’s DDS now, but I’m old, so it will always be DMV to me) so he could get his license.

Coveting my new chair

I’m not the only one enjoying my new chair.

And, in case you’re wondering why I didn’t already know all of this since I have an older daughter, it was because Brianna opted to wait until she was 18 to get her license. None of that is required if you’re 18 or older. I’m making notes for next year, though, because Megan is planning to get her license at 16, too.

Tuesday night Brianna and I may or may not have made a dozen deviled eggs just because we needed something to do with the hard boiled eggs after we tried two nifty new egg tricks. The first trick was from a video Brianna showed me on Facebook for how to make hard boiled eggs in the oven.

The next was an amazing trick my mom showed me last weekend for how to peel hard boiled eggs in a mason jar. It’s the coolest thing ever! See?

I’ve used my treadmill desk a couple of days this week. I can’t work and type while I walk unless I walk really slowly, but I figure walking slowly is still better than sitting. I’ve talked to my dad about making a better desk since this one is currently just clamped to the treadmill handles. I’m thinking about taking pictures as he works on it and posting a tutorial.

In school news, so, um, my teens are still working their ways through their workbooks. Exciting stuff. I did help Josh figure out the tricky word problem in his algebra earlier this week and explained a difficult concept to Megan in a way that she could understand, so there is that.

Over at About.com this week, I offered tips on capitalizing on the everyday educational moments.

Tonight, all of my kids are heading out with friends. That can only mean one thing: date night! Enjoy your weekend, friends!

  1. Congrats on the new driver!! You’re right, the first time driving without a parent (or in my case older sibling) in the car was WAY different.

  2. How was my week? Same as the last 6 weeks. I can’t find time to write a post for this linkup! lol Homeschooling, cheer, and now dance and tumbling, have taken over my world!
