I just got a call that changed my whole evening for the better — or made it a little easier, at least. Megan’s ballgame has been cancelled. She has practice, but Dad can take her to that while I get the other kids settled where they’re supposed to be tonight. One has a friend who is coming to spend the night and the other has a sleep-over at another friend’s house. That was going to be tricky with having to be at the ball field by 5:00, so I’m breathing a sigh of relief…even though I really enjoy going to the games.

This week, we’ve been immersed in the Middle Ages. I had checked out one book that I had thought would just be an occasional reference, but it turns out we all really enjoy it and have been using it as a read-aloud. It’s called Castle Diary: The Journal of Tobias Burgess, Page and is by Richard Platt. It’s informative and often funny, written in an easy-to-understand way with the language of the middle ages occasionally thrown in for flavor, but not so much that it makes the book hard to understand for the kids.

We’ve started our Middle Ages ABC book as suggested by Samantha in a recent Homeschool Showcase. The kids are really enjoying doing the ABC books, which could be adapted for any time period and even other subjects besides history. Josh has been excited to see the wide variety of weapons he can include in his book (B is for Battle-ax, F is for Flail…). 😉 These will be going on our table for our homeschool group’s Night at the Museum party at the end of this month. This was another Homeschool Showcase suggestion by Cindy and we’re so excited to participate!

We also made a small “loom” which Brianna has enjoyed much more than I thought she would. The loom was another idea from the book Medieval Projects You Can Do!

We ended our week by studying Georgia for our Fifty State Fridays. The Peach State is where my second favorite beverage, Coca-Cola, was invented. Georgia is home of the “three P’s”: peaches, peanuts and pecans. It’s also where Girl Scouts and the carpet industry began and is the largest state east of the Mississippi, which was surprising to me.

  1. wow! what a great loom!!!

my daughter got her brother and me making “sikuli” this week. (those popsicle stick and yarn weaving things…) it was fun with the leftover corrugated strands we still had in the craft box…

  2. Thanks for the recommendation – we’ll see if our library carries that book
You’re a busy lady – glad you were happy with the smallest of breaks

    🙂

  3. Ahhh. I almost got a little misty eyed seeing those symbols of my home state! I can get Coke here, of course, and even peanuts and pecans (thanks to Costco), but I really miss fresh Georgia peaches! Japanese peaches are good too, just different. Nice Wrap Up!

  4. Looks like there is plenty of hands on fun to be had with the Middle Ages- I love the idea of an ABC book- simple enough for even my 4 yo to participate, but can cover so much!

  5. I may have to find a copy of that book, Castle Diary. Josh was excitedly sharing with Jordan and I some of the details.

  6. What great ideas! I love the idea of an ABC book on a variety of subjects.. hmmmm. The loom is great!

  7. We’re going to do a Knights/Castles unit in May. I’ll have to drop back by and see what all you’ve done.

I’m a Georgia Girl…it doesn’t seem like it would be the largest east of the Miss., but it is. 🙂

  8. Can I just say that I LOVE that I am not the only one in the world who absolutely celebrates the canceling of somewhere I need to be; especially in the evening! No hockey, darn. No theatre, darn. Sigh, guess we’ll just have some free time!

I really like your Medieval ideas; this is one of our favorite epochs to study, we keep coming back to it each year. I’ll have fresh ideas and books to explore next time, thank you!

  9. My daughter (12) wrote a summary of our school week on her blog in order to answser some of the types of questions she is asked at swim team. Also, I am so glad that you were inspired to do A, B, C books – we really liked that project and plan to do A, B, C books again.

  10. Oh summer ball games. My oldest two daughters were in summer ball for 10 years! I don’t miss the busyness one bit.

The ABC’s sound like fun, as well as the loom. What will the loom be used for making?

    Looks like a great week!

  11. Calina: The loom will be used to make…well, uh…a woven…um…thing. 😉

In other words, we don’t know! LOL Brianna’s just having fun playing around with it.

  12. Thank you for your Homeschool History Buffs submission! I love the detailed instructions and pictures. Also, I’m loving the loom too. You are so creative with your children. Do they know what a good mamma you are? If not, read them this. : )

  13. The Ties That Bind Us — I don’t think they know, espcially today. I haven’t been feeling well and I confess to being a little grouchy. I’ll let them know you said so, though. 😉 It’s nice to hear it from *somebody*.
