I hope you’re enjoying your first Friday in November. I’m finding it difficult to believe that it’s November already. The year is flying by!

I got an unexpected day off yesterday. Josh was invited to go to the forge for a day of blacksmithing. That is such a great thing for him to be doing that there would have to be something major going on at home for me not to let him go. There wasn’t, so he went.

A rare moment of sibling sweetness.

Brianna works independently, so it didn’t affect her, but Megan and Josh do a lot of their work together. I saw no point in going forward with stuff I’d just have to repeat with Josh today, so I told Megan she had to do her independent work, then, find something constructive to do. She chose to clean her room. Works for me!

I cleaned house and got the laundry caught up – two things I thought I was going to have to do this weekend. That means maybe I’ll get to do something fun this weekend instead.

I love that the built-in catch up day with Trail Guide means that I don’t have to stress about bookwork when fun learning opportunities come our way unexpectedly.

Not only that, but Megan got invited to go home with my mom for the weekend, Josh got invited to spend the night with a friend, and Brianna has to work tonight. You know what that means, right? Date night!! We haven’t had one of those in forever. I can’t wait!

Maybe we’ll go to my very most favorite place…Chili’s. And, maybe, we’ll use a free dessert coupon (click the image below if you want one) to get my annual slice of Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie that I never got for my birthday.

Or, maybe I’ll be good. Did I tell you I wanted to lose 12 pounds by Christmas? Still, I could be good for my meal and split the dessert. I wouldn’t eat a whole one anyway. Do you have a favorite dessert at Chili’s?

Um, yeah, I might should be taking advantage of this offer for a free digital issue of Eating Well magazine instead {ahem}:

Did you see my pitiful Facebook page update where I gave my sob story about not having an iPad? I’m forever getting requests to review iPad apps, but I don’t have an iPad. I would totally be willing to review one…and do a giveaway, too. Don’t you think Apple should send me an iPad to review and one to giveaway? (Yes, I like to visit Fantasy Land from time to time.)

Those of you who have an iPad, is it something that’s just nice to have or has it become indispensable to you? I’m trying to decide if it’s just a luxury item that I really don’t need or something I should start saving for. What say you?

In more frustrating news, the Whirlpool refrigerator that we bought less than 2 years ago has started falling apart. About a month ago, all the lights in the fridge side quit working – all at once. Brian still hasn’t figured out why. Then, this week, it’s decided that maybe it will dispense water and maybe it won’t. That’s very frustrating for me since I drink about a gallon a day.

Then, two days ago, it decided it would like to freeze everything in the fridge. I wound up throwing away a lot of stuff that wasn’t meant to be frozen. It’s not really the kind of quality I’d expect from Whirlpool. I think Brian’s got the freezing problem fixed for now, but our next fridge will not be a Whirlpool!

Okay, on to something more uplifting: I’ve decided to give myself a challenge this month – do one random act of kindness a day for the entire month. I’ve found that kindness is rather addicting, so one a day may wind up being the minimum. Would you like to join me? It’s only the second day of the month – you can do two today and catch up!

  1. I hate to say it–don’t want to seem materialistic–but my iPad is indispensable to me! I’ve had it for a year and a half and can’t imagine not having it! (I don’t have a laptop computer or smartphone.). If you don’t get an iPad soon, you can forward those app review offers over to me. 🙂

  2. Gary (husband) got an ipad for his birthday and given the amount of time he spends on it, I’d say he finds it pretty indespensible! He says he likes the versatility of it and the sheer amount of aps you can get. I do my school planning in our village coffee shop and I’d love one to take with me so if you’re offered a freebie and decide it’s not an essential, can I have it??
    Thank for hosting!

  3. I love your Random Acts of Kindness idea…. might have to join you 🙂 I always enjoy reading about your weeks. You’re always so real and it makes me feel good.

  4. Is the iPad indispensable? That is a tough one. I generally am not a gadget person, and somehow I inherited mine from my husband. At first I didn’t really care for it, but now I am pretty much hooked. I use it so much teaching the little ones: songs on YouTube, learning apps, relevant videos. It is very easy for them to use, too. There are also so many apps for other purposes that I think would be helpful in teaching older kids, but I don’t have experience with them. Personally, I find that my iPad helps me get away from my computer desk. I can sit outside and research or read emails on something larger than my phone, and that makes me happy…so I guess it may be becoming indispensable. Hope you get to review one soon 🙂

  5. So enjoy keeping up with your site.
I bought an iPad about a year ago and absolutely love it. Once we added an AirPrint printer it pretty much completely replaced my laptop. The battery life is incredible. If it weren’t for the kids using Flash and Mindstorm so much we would just have iPads. It is super easy to drop the iPad into your purse for a trip to Chick-fil-a or karate class.
Love the random acts of kindness. We are observing 30 Days of Thankful here at our house. We are cleaning out clutter, writing notes of Thanks to people who are blessings to us, and blessing others through giving. It just feels like the perfect preparation for Christmas. Tonight I was so humbled as I looked at the gifts available on Compassion International. It is so easy to take clean water, food, and medicine for granted. Look forward to hearing about you acts of kindness.

  6. I have an iPad that the kids use along with many educational apps. The kids enjoy their iPad time but it really is not necessary. We still have to do math drills the old fashioned way. I think it is just a fun supplement.
We have had to fix the ice maker twice in our Frigidair Galaxy fridge. It is only 4 years old so I would not recommend it.

  7. I won an iPad last year. Yay for me! I personally would consider it a luxury and not a necessity. It’s great have while traveling, for games, reading, e-mails, news and such, but I definitely prefer my laptop for day to day use. Typing anything of length on an iPad can be frustrating and we rarely use it for anything school related.

I’m so happy to have discovered your blog!

  8. I’m not sure what I did before the iPad! I admit, my kindergartener watches a fair amount of fun videos, but I like I can also download PBS ones like Super Why? or the Team Umizoomi math games app. While it’s not a perfect substitute for phonics or math, they (and many other apps that we have) are a great reinforcement for days where at-the-table schooling just isn’t happening. (We won’t talk about being able to start blog posts from it, or Facebook, or email, or play Words with Friends…*whistling*)

  9. Bought my son an iPad for his birthday, it’s great learning tool to have with your school assignments. He is looking up anything he may not understand in all areas of subjects, the enthusiasm is perfect. He also shares during school time with siblings when needed. I could not live it out an iPad now. I homeschool 6 children and want them all to have one. Ita perfect for an homeschooled child.
