Weekly Wrap-Up

Sometimes it amazes me how fast the weeks go by. On Monday or Tuesday, it seems that time has slowed to a crawl. Then, the next thing I know, it’s Friday.

Brian and I got the week off to a great start with a breakfast date on Monday. I don’t know why we didn’t think of this before. The kids don’t like getting up early, so the only time they actually eat breakfast is on Saturday when we all sleep in and I fix brunch. So, I got up and walked, then, Brian and I went to breakfast and had time to sit, talk, enjoy each other’s company, and still get back home before the kids got up.

If you look closely in the background, you can see our Thankful Tree Door.

Aside from our breakfast date, the highlight of my week was probably Wednesday. It was just a little thing, but sometimes those are the best, right? I had my first experience of having a newly licensed driver looking for any excuse to drive and an errand that I didn’t want to run. Brianna got to drive and I got to stay home. Win-win.

I mentioned last week that we’re using Zeezok’s new music appreciation curriculum right now. I expected the wonderfully engaging composer biographies (because we’ve read a few of them before) and the listening CD of beautiful music (I really enjoy classical), but I didn’t expect fun science experiments!

oxidation

We did an experiment with oxidation and pennies as part of the lapbook activities this week. We’ve all been really interested watching the penny go from dull copper to super shiny, to green.

We’ve also been enjoying reading a biography of Alan Shepard. I think those Heroes of History biographies are my favorites. We haven’t read one yet that we didn’t all enjoy.

I think our big goal for the next two weeks will be just staying focused. We’ve only got two weeks until our winter break and we’re all getting antsy. Of course, winter break means that Christmas is right around the corner. How can that even be possible?

My mom, my sister, and I usually go Black Friday shopping. We didn’t get to go last year because we had just gotten back in town from vacation (so much fun!). This year, I’ve suggested a new tradition – that we sleep in, have breakfast together, talk about all the things we’re going to order on Amazon (and have shipped to our doors!) and go home. Doesn’t that sound much more pleasant than fighting mall crowds all day? It does to me!

Two kitties in a basket

I don’t actually think both cats were enjoying this. Luna (the dark one) is kind of a bully.

Oh, and in case you’re dying for an update (plus, it keeps me accountable), I’ve done really well getting up by 8:00 this week. Monday was the easiest day – probably helped by the time change and an impending date – but no day has been especially hard. Maybe I’m finally getting used to getting up early! I know I’m certainly ready to go to bed at night.

My sleep seems to have been a little better this week, too. I think a big part of that may be that I’ve been getting off the computer early (most nights!) and playing cards with Brian or reading before bed. You know what they say about screens affecting sleep. It may not help that my impatience led me to get the second book in the Divergent series on Kindle…and I that I use the Kindle app on my iPad.

I’m really a paper book kind of girl. This is the first book that I’ve bought on Kindle knowing I’ll want to get the print copy to keep. I wish I could have found it locally without running all over town. Guess I’ll have to be sure to turn my screen brightness down at night.

  1. I’ve been a bit naughty this week, and linked up a series I’m doing on how we homeschool. It’s been running all week and is not strictly a weekly wrap up (okay, its nothing at all to do with a weekly wrap up!). I almost didn’t link up so please do feel free to delete the link, I’ll not be offended in the slightest.
Yay for more sleep! Maybe I should try dragging myself away from the computer? I’d find that hard though as it’s the only time I’m not interrupted 150 times per minute by the children!

  2. My husband and I just started the breakfast date too! I don’t know why it took us forever to figure out that we can enjoy a nice breakfast and cup of coffee together when we are the only ones up!

  3. I am with you on the Black Friday shopping! Crowds are not worth the hassle of the hopes of a good deal. 🙂 Love your cats! Thanks for the link-up that encourages me to post about my week and how my homeschool graduates are doing.

  4. New teen drivers who volunteer to run errands are the reward for getting through the not always pleasurable experience of teaching them to drive 🙂

  5. Yes, having driving teens is a good deal. My son likes to run errands for me, because then he can go out without having to pay for gas. Another win-win.

Two weeks before your Christmas break! Good job! We’ve got a lot of schoolwork to do before then! Sigh.

  6. Hi Kris,
So glad you got a little alone time with your honey. I think it is essential to a good marriage!
I just am not one to get up early and if I do I don’t accomplish much. I am and have always been a very late night girl and can get a lot done while every one else is sleeping.
Interesting science project this week. 🙂
