It’s Weekly Wrap-Up time! How’s your summer been? Ours has been busy – the kind of busy that makes me wonder how we ever find time to homeschool when school is in session. I guess it’s just a priority shift. Somehow Twitter and blogging don’t get nearly the time that they deserve during the school year. 😉

Monday was spent cleaning house and catching up laundry after being gone most of the weekend for our company picnic, my all-day migraine on Saturday and my birthday on Sunday. It always amazes me how messy the house can get when you’re only home long enough to sleep and shower.

Tuesday was our inaugural swimming day for the year. We have a friend who graciously allows us to come swim in her pool with her and her family about once a week during the summer. Being the blonde/red-headed, blue-eyed folks that we are, we baste ourselves in sunscreen at least once an hour each time we swim. Even so, we all burned a bit our first time out this year (not unusual). Thankfully, the burns weren’t too bad. I really need to take out stock in a sunscreen company.

Wednesday, after completely forgetting about our appointment with our online tutor until an hour or two after the fact, we just hung out around the house, catching up on the important things – Twitter, blogging, email, and TV. It was nice to have a day to just relax around the house with nothing we had to do and nowhere we had to be (forgotten appointment, aside…luckily, our tutor is very gracious and forgiving).

Thursday, we were supposed to meet some friends for lunch and a play date, but they had some sickness in the family and had to postpone. That turned out to be a blessing in disguise. If we’d gone to meet them, we would have been gone all day with no one ever going down to our basement. As it was, Josh went down there about 3:00 and immediately came running back upstairs to tell me that something smelled bad and it looked smokey.

My first thought was that we had a dead creature. My second was the heat lamps on the snakes tanks (Yes, we have snakes. Two of them. Yes, they’re mine. No, I’m not crazy.). I ran down the stairs and could immediately see the smoke (not too bad, but definitely smokey) and smell the odor. I discovered a heat lamp sitting directly on the carpet, face down. Apparently, when I fed the snakes on Wednesday night, I failed to put Indy’s light back on his tank. The lights were off when I fed them, but they’re on a timer and had been on about six hours when Josh went downstairs.

This is what I found when I picked up the light:

Thank God for flame-retardant carpet and for changing our plans so that we were at home. I’m having a hard time even allowing myself to be too disgusted about a 5 inch diameter hole in my carpet when I consider how much worse it could have been. I can assure you that I will never forget to put the lamps back on the tanks again. God is so good! I dreamed about fires all night last night and didn’t sleep worth a flip.

Other than trying to catch the house on fire, I spent most of the day working through my most recent lesson in Upper Level Homeschool. Wow! I love this course! I feel like I’ve made some real headway in planning for Brianna’s high school years. I was able to find some course descriptions online that have given me some concrete ideas for designing high school coursework that will meet our families specific needs and Brianna’s personal interests. I’m actually starting to feel a little more excited about and a little less intimidated by the high school years, now.

Today was another very productive meeting with our tutor despite some technical difficulties at the beginning. I can’t say enough positive things about our tutor. She has been an absolute pleasure to work with and she’s been so willing to share tips and websites and ideas that have worked for her that will help us in our homeschool.

That’s our week in a nutshell. How was your week? Be sure to post about it and sign up with Mr. Linky. If this is your first time to join us, be sure to read the Weekly Wrap-Up guidelines.
