Happy Good Friday! I just love when Easter falls late enough in the year to promise a warm, beautiful weekend. I hope you and your family have plans to enjoy a wonderful time of fellowship and reflection on Jesus’ sacrifice for us. If you’re having trouble wrapping your mind around God’s goodness and what He did for us, I invite you to read the post, Is God Good? at Roscommon Acres. Just make sure you have a tissue or twenty handy.

It’s been a good week for us, though I wasn’t sure starting out. Monday and Tuesday were insanely busy. It can be hectic enough trying to start school back after a break, but just try tossing in an outside class and a doctor visit.

The doctor visit was mine. Last Thursday, I noticed three swollen lymph nodes on the back of my head. I only knew that’s what they were because Megan had one once. They were really painful, so I was popping ibuprofen all weekend, though that didn’t stop me from running my 3rd 5K on Saturday – my favorite yet, I think.

It wasn’t until Saturday night that I remembered that I’d gotten a tick off of me – okay, technically Brian got it off because it creeped me out – the previous Monday. I got online and looked up Lyme disease since that and Rocky Mountain Spotted Tick Fever are the only tick-related ailments I knew by name and, you know, we’re pretty far away from the Rocky Mountains.

Guess what one of the symptoms was? Yep, swollen lymph nodes.

I didn’t really think that’s what I had because I didn’t have any other symptoms, but I decided to go to the doctor anyway since it was probably related to the tick bite. She decided to treat it as Lyme disease just to be on the safe side.

Tuesday was taken up with Megan’s music class. Their end-of-year program was Tuesday night, so three hours of Tuesday morning were spent on rehearsal. Yes, three hours. It was a long day. The good thing was that the kids and I got to see a lot of our friends while we were there.

Wednesday, we finally got back to regular school. There’s something to be said for starting on a Wednesday after a break. It’s nice to get to ease back into things, plus we started with some new things.

Brianna started Switched on Schoolhouse, the big change I’ve alluded to recently. We’ll be reviewing it and I plan to share our initial thoughts sometime next month after we’ve had some time to get a feel for it. So far, so good, though.

Josh and Megan finished up their science curriculum so we started on the next level, Earth and Space. This week we’ve been talking about weather, so we finally got to use the thermometer I bought at last year’s curriculum fair and had almost forgotten about.

Today, I had the younger two kids write about their favorite thing about Easter. This is the third random paragraph I’ve assigned lately – one of those “oh crud, I haven’t had the kids write much this week, I’d better give them an assignment” kind of things.

It’s also the third time I’ve been pleasantly surprised at how well my boy puts his thoughts down on paper. As I told him, his spelling is atrocious, but he writes really well. Wouldn’t it be funny if the one who has given me such fits learning to read turned out to be my eloquent writer? That would just fit with God’s sense of humor.

My personal accomplishment this week was running a little over 4 miles today. It’s the farthest I’ve run at once so far. If you’ve thought about running, but have been hesitant to give it a try, check out my tips for beginning runners at my weight-loss fitness blog. It’s a list of things that helped me as I started out.
I guess that’s it for the highlights of my week. Enjoy your Easter weekend!

  1. I hate ticks.. they creep me out, too. I hope everything is okay.

Kudos on your run. I wish I could do that! Way to go!!!

  2. I think the writing assignments that relate to the current holiday are the finest kind 🙂 Happy Easter to you and your family too!

  3. I need to do more writing assignments like you are doing…I get stuck in the IEW rut, and I think my ds gets bored with it.

Praying you are feeling better. Happy Easter.

  4. Oh wow, yay on the fitness blog 🙂 God is doing great things. Glad you got to the doctor too!

  5. Oh my gosh, Kris! I've had full blown Lyme Disease and it is soooo painful! I was in bed sick for months. Make sure that you get both rounds of medication just in case. You really don't want to mess with LD. I had secondary symptoms that left me on medication (that made me sick) for a year. When we moved to Alabama my entire family about cried everytime we had to remove a tick. We've gotten a bit immune and have learned that we can't stay inside indefinitely so we just trust God to protect us from all tick borne illnesses. Seriously. Ewww…:(

Congratulations on another 5K run! You inspire me.
