Weekly Wrap-Up: The One Where the Dirty Dishes and Laundry Are Taking Over the House

It’s Weekly Wrap-Up time!  How was your week?  Mine seemed hectic and busy, as if I just couldn’t keep ahead of the laundry, the dirty dishes and the errands.  Today, though, we’ve had a light school day, with the kids doing their boxes, and I am feeling kind of sort of caught up.  Kind of-sort of as in:  the load of clothes that was in the washer is now in the dryer, another is in the washer and only one is sitting in the bathroom floor, and the dirty dishes that were in the sink this morning are still in the sink, but they’re clean, the dishwasher is full of clean dishes that need to be put away and the dirty dishes that are in the kitchen now are from lunch, so I’m only one meal behind.

Whew!  I’m sincerely hoping to get caught up this weekend, at least vacuum and dust the house, get yesterday and today’s schoolwork checked and get lesson plans done for next week.  Ambitious?  Maybe.  Doable?  I think so.  Have I mentioned that I’m ready for Spring Break?

Gloom and doom aside, it’s a beautiful, sun-shiny sixty-six degrees today, which makes my mood considerably lighter despite still being behind-ish.  And, New Moon comes out on DVD at 12:01 Friday night/Saturday morning, which gives me something to look forward to.

In school news, this week, I felt like we might just be keeping our heads above water, but, looking back, we got quite a  bit accomplished.  Brianna is finishing up Around the World in Eighty Days today and will be able to delve more fully into Modern Times from Pandia Press next week, so I’m excited about that.  I think she’ll really like it after she gets past Around the World, which didn’t impress her much.

Josh and Megan, of course, are still working on American history.  We’ve finally finished our “bridge” between where we left off with Story of the World and where we’re picking up with our pieced-together study.  Next week, we’ll get into learning about the early colonists and Native Americans, which I think will be fun for them.

We’ve also been spending some time on art this week with a product that I received to review from regular Homeschool Showcase contributor, Terry Holliday.  Terry has put together an art course that’s available on DVD or as an online course.  She sent me the DVD to review.  I had intended to have Brianna be my guinea pig, but I was also supposed to be reviewing Artistic Pursuits, so I decided to do the DVD course myself.

After viewing a bit of it, I decided to adapt the course a bit for Josh and Megan.  They’ve really been enjoying it.  Josh really surprised me on Thursday by taking his project in the van with him so he could continue working on it while we were on our way to the Y.  This is the kid who has previously grumbled about nearly every art assignment we’ve ever done.  He was so proud of his finished project, he immediately started a second one in his journal, which he’d also brought with him.  Impressive.  I’ll be posting my full review on Monday, March 29, but so far, it’s a definite thumbs-up.

I’ve been engrossed in Jodi Piccoult books.  I read My Sister’s Keeper a couple of weeks ago.  Though I wasn’t crazy about the ending (or Piccoult’s peppering of profanity), I found the story itself engrossing.  I checked a couple of her books out from the library last week.  I’m currently reading Plain Truth and finding it every bit as engrossing as My Sister’s Keeper.

And, since I don’t think I’ve updated my weight-loss here lately, I’m up to 34.6 lbs. lost.  That’s after adding 3.2 lbs. to my total this week.  Don’t be too impressed though.  The majority of last week’s weight loss most likely came from being violently ill Sunday night.  Not the most fun way to lose weight.  Still, I’m hoping to at least keep that off.  I have my yearly doctor’s visit (fun times!) in mid-April and I’m hoping to be down 40 lbs. by then…you know, so when the nurse weighs me and updates my chart she’ll say, “Wow!  You’ve lost a lot of weight.”

I’m going to be really mad if she doesn’t say that.  😉

I guess that’s it for the highlights of our week.  It’s really just been an average “do school, go to the Y, try to keep the housework caught up and meals prepared” kind of week. How was your week? 1. Only one load of laundry on the floor??? Wow, impressive! 😀 And I'm down the EXACT same amount in my weight loss journey – 34.6. 🙂 I'm looking forward to reading the review about the art stuff. I don't even try to do anything art related right now because I'd just be fighting with my kiddo all the time.

  2. I've heard it said that in any given day you can have a productive day of school, a clean house, or a wonderful home-cooked dinner. But, you shouldn't count on more than one of these each day. 😉

Great job on the weight loss. I am impressed all over again when I jump on your site and see your new profile pic smiling back at me. If that nurse doesn't comment she must be very unobservant. She may need some prompting . . .

    Have a great weekend!

  3. I don't even want to talk about laundrey. Ack! LOL

WTG on the weight loss! You are awesome!!

I love Jodi Piccoult books. I just finished Nineteen Minutes. Wow! I'm dying to read her new one. I know my sister will buy and then send it to me so I don't have to wait forever at the library. LOL

  4. Diana — WTG on YOUR weight loss!

Angela — I've got Handle with Care on my dresser to read. I got it at the used bookstore, so I'll probably read the other one I got from the library first. It's in queue though. I'm glad to hear that it's good.

Erin — Love the new screen name! 😉 Yeah, I may be inclined to prompt the nurse (and my doctor!) if she doesn't comment.

Giggly Girls — Nineteen Minutes sounds good. I'll have to keep an eye out for it at the used bookstore.

  5. You know, it is kinda funny though, I say the same thing about being sick. The only good thing about sickness is the lack of food going in, so the weight goes down. 🙂

  6. Kris, thanks for noticing the name change. I'm kind of jumping the gun since we have almost 2 months to go before we actually see 'number 6' but most days that little one takes more out of me than all the others put together, so I figured I might as well change it now. 😉

  7. I can totally resonate with the dishes and things getting out of hand… are you sure you weren't at my house this week???

  8. PS. Please be aware that Mormons are grossly misrepresented in Around the World in 80 Days. I can sympathize with your daughter: I wasn't too impressed either, though it's a fun concept for a story!

  9. I'd expect a high five and a little victory dance for a 35-pound weight loss! Way to go, you!

I hear you on laundry – mine is spilling out of its baskets and overtaking the closet floors as I type this. Dishes are under control, but only because I was trained so thoroughly by my husband that I can't go to sleep at night unless the sink is empty. His legacy lives on in clean plates and spotless silverware. 🙂

  10. Hi! I am a new soon-to-be homeschooling mom of one of my four children. Long story. But, we are very excited! He is a 13 year old boy. I am interested in any other bloggers who homeschool their teen boys, for a little info and support. I am completely winging it.

    Thanks!
    Nicole

  11. I've had clean laundry ready to be folded and put away in the living room since Tuesday! Hopefully it will be done before tomorrow
