I have a confession to make: It’s been such a busy day that I almost forgot the Weekly Wrap-Up. Yikes!

I got up this morning and met my mom and sister for breakfast. Then, I came home made some phone calls and paid some bills before waking the kids to do morning chores and start school. Then, it was lunch, off to Megan’s American Girls book club, and the library and grocery store on the way home.

It’s been crazy.

It’s been a nice week. My friend Christina’s memorial was Monday. As a friend so perfectly put it, it was simple and beautiful, just like Christina. Her husband wrote an incredibly beautiful and moving eulogy that was the perfect tribute to someone so special. There was standing room only in the church – and it wasn’t a small church. It was obvious that Christina profoundly touched everyone with whom she came into contact. She will be missed terribly.

Tuesday was a gorgeous day. I started it out with a six-mile run (never thought I’d say those words) and while I was running, it occurred to me that we might not have many more of these gorgeous fall days.

I was trying to think of a fun way the kids and I could get out and enjoy the day together in a slightly educational way, so I wouldn’t feel wrong about counting it as a school day. The local nature center was the perfect solution.

We loaded up our sketchbooks and went to observe. Most of the animals they have are those that have been injured in the wild and are unable to survive on their own. They have a bald eagle, a great horned owl, two barn owls and two hawks.

They also have red wolves. They’re part of a program that breeds them to increase the population. There were only two the last time we went. Now there are two adults, two juveniles, and some pups that we couldn’t see. It was really cool to watch them interact with each other.

Wednesday and Thursday we were back to regular school work. We had fun sorting and classifying rocks for science and reading about colonial America in history.

  1. I have been thinking about you all week, hoping things were okay with you. It sounds like you made it through the week just fine with a perfect balance of honoring memories, school, and getting outdoors.

    Thanks for hosting the wrap-up.

  2. I think I've heard of that nature center but we've never been to it. We have one near us and I can't believe I've never taken Kathryn there. Must do that soon.

Glad to hear Christina's service was so lovely. Still praying for her family.

  3. Thanks, Barb. It was a much better week than I'd expected. I hope Christina's family has found that to be true, too. My heart is just broken for them.

  4. Hi Kris, I've been praying for you and your friend's family through the week.  I will continue praying!

The nature center looks awesome!  We haven't done too much like that this year.

  5. Glad to hear that Christina's service was great, I've been thinking about your family and hers all week.  Looks like you had a great time at the nature center.  Thanks for remembering the weekly wrap-up!

PS-I can't believe that you ran 6 miles, I would loved to run that far, but around the block is about all I can get :).  I'm more of a walker.

  6. I never, ever would have dreamed that I could run that far. I ran 11 miles Thursday. I'm supposed to run 12 one day next week and then my first half-marathon is coming up on Nov. 12.

  7. Congrats on your six mile run!  You rock!  I can run 3 in 30 right now and that's an amazing feat for me.  Spending a day at a nature center sounds like a very educational way to seize this gorgeous autumn weather.

  8. 3 in 30 is great! I'd love to get faster. I'd be happy to break 30 minutes for a 5K…even 29:59 would be okay. 😉

  9. I always like it when people are late at things like posting. It makes me feel like I'm more normal. 🙂 I'm sad for your friend's family…and happy she was honored and will be remembered as someone with standing room only at her service.

  10. I am so sorry about the loss of your friend.

We have a nature center that is not too far away.  I should take my boys for a visit.

    6 miles! Wow. Amazing.

  11. What a tribute to Christina's life, having the church full and her husband give a beautiful eulogy.  I will keep her family (and you) in my prayers.

I love the nature center photos!  How wonderful that you have something like that close to home.

Hope you have a good weekend!
    Many blessings,
    Lisa

  12. Nice nature journal drawing! I tried to link up twice both unsuccessful. The first one I found the error, the second one I don't know what is wrong. I guess I will have better luck next week, entries 60 and 61. Thank you for sharing your week.
