Weekly Wrap-Up

I love Fridays!  Even on a good week, like this one, I love the promise of two days without commitments.  Have you had a great week?  We have.  We usually don’t take Labor Day off, but we did this year.  We hit the school year pretty hard and heavy, so we were all ready for a break.  We did absolutely nothing on Monday.  Nice.Well, I did try to catch up some laundry and a little bit of housework, but I don’t mind doing that when it’s on my own terms.  You know, like after I’ve slept in, worked out, read my email, blogged, and all that other important stuff.

Tuesday, Brianna’s volleyball team had an away game — way away.  It was nearly an hour drive.  I told Brian that it would stink to drive all that way and lose.  We didn’t.  The girls won their first game!  Both the varsity and junior varsity teams won!  It was so exciting.  They won again on Thursday, too, so it’s been a good volleyball week.  Win or lose, playing is fun…but it’s more fun to win.

Kids at Pond

Wednesday, we took a little field trip after Megan’s music class.  We were supposed to go to a pond to observe pond life, do some nature sketching, and take some samples of pond water for a science lab.  It was a great time to go; no one was there but us.  I wish we’d taken food for the ducks, because they were sure expecting it.  We had these four really big ducks — I’m showing my city-girl ignorance and saying that I think they might have been geese, but I’m not sure — that walked right up to us, honking and basically demanding some food.  Um, sorry, guys.  These guys…are they geese?

The three in the front are geese, right?  And, the little guy in the back is a white duck tagging along.  We even saw a duck egg.

Thursday was our lab and that was really cool.  We had four different samples of pond water, each with a different food source — dry grass, soil, white rice, and a boiled egg yolk.  We put a drop of each on a slide and tried to identify the microorganisms under the microscope.  It’s music to a homeschool mom’s ears when you hear a kid say, “Oh, this is so cool!”

And it really was cool.  We could actually see things swimming around in there!  We’re going to look again in a couple of days.  The microorganisms are supposed to be at their peek on the 2nd-5th days, so yesterday was a little early to look.

Today we had our annual Not-Back-to-School party with our homeschool group, which is always lots of fun.  It was great seeing old friends and making new ones — for the moms and the kids.  It was still really hot in the sun, but under the shaded pavilion with a nice breeze blowing, it was a very pleasant way to spend a Friday afternoon.

  4. You guys always have fun. I love reading about your Science. Your posts are uplifting and fun:-).

Great pictures of the geese and pond.

Hope your upcoming week is just as good as this one was!

Thank you for hosting this each week!

  5. We did that lab and here's a word to the wise – don't breathe in when you open the jar with the yolk in it for the second lab. My daughter gagged – it's truly smelly the second time around!

  6. If you swagbuck/google "how to tell the difference between duck and goose", it shows that it is actually a very popular question. Upon reading the articles the most obvious difference is the neck length and size although it's not always true. Anyways, what great pics!!! :O)

  7. Hey… we had a homeschool group party too. A back to school bash. Lotsa fun! Love your photos. What a great week.

  8. We joined the "wrap up" for the first time this week. It is fun seeing all the posts.

The pond water lab does sound cool!! We are studying ponds/streams next week, so I think we may give it a try. 🙂

  9. Kris … thanks so much for hosting this every week! I always look so forward to reading everybody's ideas and I ALWAYS pick up some things to use myself. This week it was a mummification computer module and how to mummify apples. Great ideas that I would have never found without your wrap-up.

    Have a great weekend!

  10. I just stumbled across your blog, and I LOVE it! I'm a new follower, and will start to get a weekly wrap up post together so that I can participate in the future. Thanks for hosting!

  11. I tried leaving a comment the other day…but my computer was wonky and I don't think it went through. Sorry if this is a repeat comment! 🙂

It sounds like a really amazing week. Especially for a short week, which ca feel rushed. You cracked me up with the duck/geese comment. It reminded me of when I was a teen, working in a grocery store and I couldn't tell the difference between cabbage and lettuce LOL!
