Welcome to the first Weekly Wrap-Up of  2011!  How many times have you accidentally written 2010 on things so far?  I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s break with your family and, for those like me who resumed school this week, a great first week back.

Things went fairly smoothly for us this week.  Thankfully, we had one more week off from Brianna’s Spanish class, so we were able to kind of ease into things this week.  Monday went well as we jumped back into a full load, minus Spanish.  The day had kind of a crazy ending, though.

I went to dinner with some friends and came home looking forward to reading to Josh and Megan, getting them in bed and spending time with Brian.  Instead, I got to take Brianna to an after-hours pediatric office – thank goodness for them! – to get her diagnosed with an middle ear infection and get a prescription to get her started on antibiotics.  She has always been extremely prone to ear infections and has never – really, never – complained about her ear hurting that it wasn’t an ear infection.

One really nice thing about the after-hours office – besides the fact that there was only one other patient there and we were able to be seen and treated quickly – was that we were able to go at night, while the other kids were home with Brian, and our school day wasn’t totally disrupted the next day.  Honestly?  I think I might actually prefer the after-hours place to our regular doctor’s office.

I can see it now:  Mom, why do we have to wait until after 6:30 to go to the doctor?

Because, sweetie, we’re waiting for the after-hours place to open.

The rest of the week was fairly normal.  Tuesday, we went out and looked for worms for our science labs for the rest of the week.  I love how hands-on Science Odyssey is.  It’s so much more fun looking at actual worms than it would be to read about them or just look at pictures in books.

One of the labs we did was to see whether worms prefer light or dark, smooth or rough surfaces, moisture or dryness, and – our personal favorite – what they think about vinegar.  We were supposed to soak the end of a paper towel in vinegar and hold it near, but not touching, the worm and see what his reaction was.

The other experiments had been so-so, with not huge preferences either way (mostly the worm just seemed to be trying to escape), but this one was cool.  He clearly did not like the smell of vinegar.  He would get close and then just totally recoil, nearly flipping over backwards to get away from the vinegar.  That was fun.

We’ve been plugging away with Institute for Excellence in WritingThis week’s assignment was perfect for our first week back.  We watched only about 10 minutes or so of a DVD lesson then had to come up with interesting titles for our previous writing assignments.  All three kids really enjoyed that and it was a nice, low-key way to get back into writing.

Now, it’s Friday and I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend with my family and hoping that we don’t get snowed in.  Snow on Christmas was nice.  It was pretty.  Now, I’m done with winter and ready for spring.

  1. So sorry to hear about your daughter. Ear infections are pretty common right now. I have seen several posts about this. I hope it warms up for you soon. We have had lots of rain, clouds, and cold too. Have a great week, and I look forward to 2011 week 2 next time.

  2. I took Quack to the dr Tues and he had an ear infection too! I would say it's contagious, but I know for a fact they are not! lol

Glad you guys had a great first week back!

  3. Done with winter and ready for spring…that sounds like me. But as I look out my window right now, I see white all over the ground. It is melting a bit each day but I am so ready for Spring. I hate to rush it but, well, you know…
Glad you had a good week, and thank God for after-hours clinics!

  4. I just love that first picture – with the reader, Brian (I assume), and the kitten!

Love SO too – we are doing Chemistry this year. So hands-on and fun. Loved hearing about the worm and vinegar!

  5. That worm experiment looks interesting! So funny about the vinegar. . . Hope your daughter feels better soon. 🙂
