Tonight brought a really fun end to the school week.  We had an outing for the boys in our homeschool group to a local indoor laser tag place — heaven for a boy!  All the boys had a great time chasing each other and they all came out red-faced, sweaty, and begging for a second game.  We’ll definitely be going back soon.

On Monday, Brian was home and got to join us for school for a little while.  One of the things we learned this week was that the people of the Renaissance began to have time to enjoy a variety of recreational entertainment.  One of the games they enjoyed was Fox and Geese, whose directions are included on the back of our checker board.  We pulled it out to play and everyone got in on the action, including Dad.  It requires a lot more strategic planning than you first assume.  I didn’t win a single game.

I had grand plans for science this week, but they didn’t pan out.  I was going to borrow AFWife’s idea for creating a solar system model with balloons.  I even had this nifty site bookmarked for figuring out how to make it to scale.  Our afternoons seemed to get crowded up with outside activities, though, so we never had time.  Maybe soon.

We’ve still been really enjoying our art lessons.  This week, we did a lesson on mixing colors.  It was really interesting to me to see the variety of shades that we each had.  There weren’t specific directions for amounts of paint to use, so even though we all followed the same directions, we all came up with a wide variety of different shades.

I think the kids really enjoyed the conclusion of the lesson today more than they did the beginning earlier in the week.  In our first lesson, we were given specific colors to mix together.  Today, the kids could mix the colors any way they wanted.  Again, it was really neat to see the variety.

Of course, Wednesday was Josh and Megan’s first music class of the year and our nature study.  We also had Brianna’s volleyball practice on Tuesday and Thursday.  The team is really coming along.  They have their first scrimmage game next Thursday.  I think they are as nervous as they are excited and I’m anxious to see them play.

  2. hey girl, I'm finally getting back into blogville. Sounds like you had a fun week! I've always been terrible at art- wish they had that kind of stuff in our art class when I was in school!

  3. Thanks for the link to the solar system model. I've been wanting to do something like that, but the balloons is a new idea! Great week!

  4. I'll have to check the back of our checkerboard and see if we have any bonus instructions.

I like the art lesson. Fox is colorblind so I'd be interested to see his results.

  5. OH I missed the Mr. Linky, shoot! Labor Day confused me and I thought it was Sunday for the past 3 days lol.

I like the art lessons, are you using a certain program then?

  6. Erica,

Yes, we're using Berry Stebbing's God and the History of Art. It's something I've drooled over since the 2nd year we homeschooled and finally bought this year. We're really enjoying it!
