Another week of the newest school year is under our belts. For us, it’s been a week of getting back into a routine after vacation and it hasn’t been too bad.

I seriously considered taking Monday off, but I already had my schedule written and the weekend pretty much tossed us back into the deep end of the reality pool, so I decided there was no reason to give us another day to have to tack on at the end of the year.

Thankfully, we had nowhere we had to be at any time on Monday, so we were able to ease back into school without other commits affecting our schedule. Tuesday was a little rushed with Brianna having a volleyball game and Brian having a softball tournament.

Her team lost; his won. Actually, Brian’s team went on the win the entire tournament, so that was pretty cool. Before all the games, we did manage to squeeze in a couple of fun science experiments…of which I failed to take pictures.

This week hasn’t been a terribly exciting one, but the routine works just as well for me, especially just coming off of vacation and trying to get back into the swing of things.

I did do the first major overhaul of my mom binder in several years. I’ll be posting details next week. I’m so proud of the way it turned out – nothing major and exciting, I guess, just different and more what I need for this season of life.

Last night, I was sitting at my laptop – waiting for it to finish a defrag, and waiting, and waiting – when I heard a noise out on the porch. I thought another cat might be out there messing with our cats, so I went to investigate.

I opened the door only to find a scrawny little possum staring me in the face. It’s no wonder those things get run over all the time. It didn’t get in any hurry at all as it walked right past me, down the stairs, and wandered off out past the flower bed.

I wish I’d gotten a picture – either of the possum or of my cats looking like they weren’t sure if they should attack this strange creature or run from it.

One final thought, just so you don’t think it’s all rainbows and pixie dust around here: Sometimes teaching a dyslexic kid, who probably also has some auditory processing issues, to read is a lot like teaching Joey, from Friends, how to speak French.

I really, really wanted to embed the video, but embedding was disabled. You really should click over and watch the video, though. There are those of you out there who can totally relate and if you’re one of them, you need the laugh. Really, I know you do.

  1. I'm glad you posted the link to Friends, it's been a long time since I have watched a clip!  And, I can totally relate, we have those moments here too.  More than I'd like to admit 🙂

  2. Good thing it was a scrawny one–the big ones are MEAN!  We had one in our trash can once and it was scary!

Looking forward to reading about your mom binder–this is my first year to finally get one together and I'm always looking for ideas!

We're still getting back into our routine, too.  It takes a little while.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. I can't believe we've already completed our fifth week of school.  My goal is take December completely OFF this year, so I hope that happens!

I don't think I would have liked an encounter with a possum! I have seen one in our yard once and he was U.G.L.Y.!

  4. LOL Kris, thank you for that video clip. I'd not seen that one before, but I always compare teaching my dyslexic son to read (and going through speech therapy) like the "I want to buy a hamburger" scene from Pink Panther (with Steve Martin). Tis true.

  5. Possum!! Eeek! We've seen one saunter through our backyard at daybreak. Mostly, though they just throw themselves in front of cars on the road.  🙂

  6. When Kathryn was little & love Dora the Explorer, she always hid from the tv when Swiper came on. Then one night at my mom's house, she saw a possum on the back porch and was convinced it was Swiper. She wouldn't go in my mom's kitchen after dark for years after that. 🙂

  7. Yeah, I've heard that about the big ones. That's why I was kind of debating whether I should quickly shut the door or try to grab my camera. While I was debating, he just sauntered away. He decided for me. lol

  8. Ha Ha!  That's how I felt this week with grammar with my son!  I wanted to put his head (or mine!) through a wall. 🙂

  9. I am so going to watch that video- that is my life! 🙂

I miss linking up, but we have been out of sync around here for a the last few weeks.  I'd like to hear more about your mom binder. I'll watch for it.

  10. Oh my goodness! I don't know whether to laugh or cry! Poor Joey, speaking complete and utter gibberish…and he didn't have a clue! Didn't matter what she did or said – he could not hear her!

So painfully, frustratingly true. And sort-of funny. At least, when it's Joey.

    Thank you – I think…

  11. If you've been there, done that, you know it can sound a lot like sounding out and putting together words with a kid who has dyslexia/auditory processing issues. *sigh* "C-A-T…ball." Okay, maybe it's not that bad, but close.

  12. How cool! (the possum sighting)

Looking forward to seeing how you've rearranged your mom's binder.  I love organization!

  13. I felt the same way with my first grader this week. I was having to review basic letter sounds with her. She doesn't seem very interested in learning the sounds but wants to read. I tried to explain to her that it is one in the same.
