I don’t know about you, but we pretty much hit the ground running on our first week back to school after Christmas break.  We were thrown in to the deep end of the pool, like it or not, with the younger kids’ music class resuming on Wednesday as well.

Things have gone surprisingly well this week.  Everyone has had a good attitude and the kids all seem to be genuinely interested in the study of health and the human body as we’ve resumed Nutrition 101.  We didn’t get very far the first time around, so we just started at the beginning again.  I can tell you that my own enthusiasm for the study is much higher this time now that I’m actually trying to change to healthier eating habits for myself while dragging the rest of the family with me.

We’ve been working on brain hats all week (hat tip to Erin for posting the link once upon a time).  We were supposed to finish these yesterday, but we got our first decent snow of the year and Megan made a very convincing argument about us never getting snow, so we should have a snow half-day since they’d worked so hard on their morning work.  You just can’t ignore sound argument like that.  Hopefully we’ll get them done today, along with the other activity I’d planned to go along with the unit.

I was going to have Brianna (who is still on a “new laptop” high) resume her regular work instead of picking back up with the Twilight study she’d been doing before Christmas.  However, when I finally got around to going through and reorganizing everyone’s workboxes, I discovered that she’d done more than I thought she had on the unit.  She really wanted to learn about World War I (when Edward was human) and The Great Depression (when Rosalie was human), so I picked up a bunch of books at the library on Sunday (she was at her grandparents’).

When I showed Brianna the books on Monday, she was sincerely excited about them.  She decided she wanted to learn about the two time periods in order, so she started on World War I.  I had picked up a book about Anastasia since Brianna has always been interested in her and she lived around the time of WWI.  Brianna chose to begin with that one for her historical fiction.  She informed me today that Anastasia was born the same year as Edward and died the same year that he became a vampire.  Very interesting — and relevant enough to Brianna that I doubt she’ll ever forget that fact.

She told me she was going to add it to her timeline.  The timeline that she informed me she was really enjoying working on.  This would be my kid who has always hated timelines with a passion.  Brianna is going to learn about WWI this month and, the last week of the month, prepare a presentation board based on what she’s learned.  She’s actually very excited about it…and so am I!

On a personal note, my weight-loss efforts are going well.  Surprisingly, I lost 5.2 pounds last week — I have no idea where such a high number came from — giving me a total of 15.6 pounds lost since I began the week of Thanksgiving.

That’s our week in a nutshell. How was your week? Be sure to post about it and sign up with MckLinky. If this is your first time to join us, be sure to read the Weekly Wrap-Up guidelines.

  1. Love the brain hat idea, thanks for posting. I'm definately not running yet with school, thought I would try to find the house and the school stuff this week…guess I am running out of time….

  2. This looks like you guys had a great week! I wish we'd gotten off to a roaring start like that. I'll have my link up shortly.

  3. Great attitudes all around here too! And we had to take a few breaks for snow here too because it is such a rarity in GA.

I'm so glad to hear of someone else who just "starts at the beginning" again if you haven't gotten far. I have one, though, who will say, "Hey, we already read this last year/two years ago/last time!"

Congrats on the weight loss! 🙂

  4. What a great week back! I wish mine had gone that well. Congrats on your weight loss!! That's awesome!

On Wednesday I finally worked up the nerve to listen to the Home for Christmas song, I cried like a baby. Thank you, it was perfect. I sent it on to my Dad, I think he'll like it too.

  5. Ya'll had a great week! I am trying to get out of this holiday rut… and back into a routine! 🙂

  6. Yay for your great week and for the continued weightloss. 5.2 lbs is alot. Especially at this time of year!

Good for you that you were able to incorporate Twilight (Brianna's interests)into your schoolwork. I find that working something my child is interested in works to create enthusiasm for me, too.

Good for you for giving a snow day, too! Simple rewards like this make my daughter work so much harder!

BTW, we have about a foot of snow here in OH. I'll be glad to share if you like more. LOL!

  7. We felt the same way, jumping right back into things with full force. It feels really good to have a good week under our belt, because I know they won't all be that way!

Congrats, again on the weight loss. You are doing such an amazing job. Praying that you continue to see progress in this area!

  8. Calina, my kids would LOVE to take some of your extra snow. I wouldn't mind, either, as long as we could have it on the weekend when no one had to go anywhere and it could conveniently melt by Monday morning. I'd actually love to have a decent snow for doing all the fun snow stuff. We just had enough to make a mess.
