Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! It’s hard to believe that we’re at the end of our first six weeks already. It’s great timing, too – we’re having unseasonably cool weather, so I’m hoping next week will be a great week to get out and do stuff.

We did something a little unusual for us last Sunday evening – we all went to a movie. Brian, Brianna, and Megan go all the time (one of the perks of Brianna working at a movie theater), but Josh and I are homebodies who really don’t care for movies most of the time. We all wanted to see the new Percy Jackson movie, though, so off we went. The movie was good, but the best part was enjoying some family time together.

Tuesday was a super-exciting day. I got to do something I’ve been wanting to do for several months – give my younger two kids their own laptops! I’ve been saving for awhile and it was a complete surprise to them…well, until the Amazon box showed up. Megan had an inkling at that point.

They were just as excited as I was and they’ve really been enjoying having their own laptops. Now, they’re set for math (Teaching Textbooks) and typing, which we’ll start later this year. Once they get pretty comfortable typing, I want to start having them type their writing assignments. I think this will be especially useful for my dyslexic kid. I may even let him use our Dragon software.

I love being able to use the editing features in Word, so that I can mark edit suggestions without marking all over their papers. I used to do that with Brianna.

I posted a photo on my Facebook wall that was very popular this week:

dirty kitchen

It included the caption: Don’t get discouraged. Sometimes this is what real life looks like.

Thankfully, it’s pretty rare that my sink is piled that high with dirty dishes, but sometimes it happens. I think we all need to be reminded that sometimes we just can’t do it all. And, guess what? The Earth didn’t stop turning! Those dishes were still there waiting for me when I had time to get to them. Right now, my kitchen is spotless. It will stay that way for a little while, too…because we’re eating out tonight!

Before I head out to get started on my break week, I want to make sure you know about a couple of exciting opportunities. One is the giveaway I’ve got going for a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator. The giveaway closes Monday night, so make sure you enter!

The other is {insert drum roll} there is an amazing e-book sale starting on Tuesday – over 90 incredible e-books, so be ready!

  1. We bought my son a lap top too last weekend. He was so excited. In England he will be going into his secondary school and we always said that would be the time we would buy them their own computer. Our twins will be requiring one each next year. Gulp! Two together, I’d better start some serious saving now!
Hope you have a great week off.

  2. What a wonderful gift! I’m sure they will get much good use! 🙂 I just love your photo. Truly. It is definitely my real life. 😉

  3. That was my kitchen this week. We are in our third year of homeschooling and this is my first time TRULY experience not being able to keep the house clean like so many home schooling moms talk about…but they may be due to the fact that my husband started working from home earlier this year and now with all of us here during the day, it’s just hard to keep up!!!

  4. Josh and Megan must be thrilled with their new computers – I guess that’s going to make things run even more smoothly in your homeschool!
We’re thinking of going to see the Percy Jackson movie today. I love going to the cinema all together, it’s such a treat.
Have a great weekend & thanks for hosting!

  5. Your son looks so happy with his new laptop. He’ll like it a lot, it’s just like one of ours.
Thanks for hostessing the Weekly Wrap up and for allowing me to add my link!
Have a great weekend! betty jo

  6. I can totally relate to the sink full of dishes! When we returned from vacation in early July, we came home to an inoperative dishwasher! We tried a number of things to fix it while continuing to hand wash. Finally, just last week, we were able to pull it out, take it outside and give it a good cleaning. There was pasty powdered detergent caked in all the holes. I haven’t used powdered detergent in the dishwasher in quite some time. Anyway, we cleaned up to working order, and alas, my fingers are no longer wrinkly!

Way to go on completing your first six weeks! We just completed our first two. Whoo hooo!!!

  7. I am sort of homeschooling my oldest Daughter, Addison, age 5. She is actually in a virtual public school, but everyone still thinks I’m doing it all myself. There is a woman who is like a mother to me, who keeps telling my husband and me that we are not educated enough to do as good of a job as a teacher. I have tried my best to explain the difference to her, but have gotten nowhere. Where do some of you stand on this? Is it still home school?

    1. Virtual public school is public school. You’re still considered part of the public school system and are under their guidelines. It’s advertised as a public school option You are registered with the public school system and not as a homeschooling family, if I’m not mistaken. As for me, I would be rather offended by someone telling me I’m not educated enough to teach my own child.

  8. That is what I thought, but apparently the general public still sees it as home-schooling. I constantly am fielding concerns from friends and family about her not getting enough socialization. My husband and I were rather insulted when we were told that we weren’t educated enough to teach our own child, especially since I will be graduating college in the spring.

As for it being public school, I thought there would be a lot more interaction with her teacher, but it seems I’m doing all the work without the benefit of shaping her curriculum myself. I’m feeling quite frustrated already, and we are only two weeks in to the year.

    1. The general public sees it as homeschooling because she isn’t in a school building somewhere. I would imagine that you would be fielding those sorts of questions for the same reason that homeschooling families do. Unfortunately, in the case of a virtual public school, many families are caught between two worlds because it is a public school option, rather than being an “official” homeschooler. I’ll confess that I don’t understand the appeal of virtual public school. It seems like you’re still tied to the expectations of public school without the benefits of homeschool, other than the fact that your child is physically home with you.

  9. There is room to work ahead, and I don’t get notes from her teacher every day about her behavior issues, but otherwise, you are right. We also live in a rather poor school district, and I wanted her to have access to a good quality education, but I must confess I feel ill-equipped to come up with all her lessons myself. We are also low income, so I was afraid I would not be able to afford quality education materials. I guess I will make a decision at the end of this first year regarding how to proceed with her education. You have a wonderful website, and have been very informative about “officially” homeschooling. Thank you for taking the time to talk to me, I greatly appreciate it.
