Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! I hope you’ve had a wonderful week. Ours has been the laid-back summer vacation sort that I prefer. I have really goofed off online and procrastinated more than I should this week, but I’ve found it really hard to feel too guilty about it. After all, it’s my summer break. I’ll be plenty productive in a few weeks when school resumes.

My younger two kids have been looking forward to next week for the last several weeks. Well, I take that back. Megan’s been looking forward to it since last year. It’s camp week! I’m as excited about camp week as they are because Brian took off work, so we get date week. Yep, you read that right – a date week. I can’t wait!

(I had no desire to see this movie until I heard a few people mention how good it was. I loved it! I highly recommend it and am looking forward to seeing it again myself.)

Megan has gymnastics camp the following week. After that, I’ve got some fun outings in mind that I’d like to do with the kids once a week or so. Megan has been wanting to go to a new jump park in the area (an indoor trampoline place) and there is an indoor rock climbing center that sounds fun, too.

Also, both Josh and Megan have expressed interest in going running with me. So, I really want us all to start going 2 or 3 mornings a week – preferably 3. We must all really be changing because they both seemed to act as if it was a viable idea when I suggested that we get in the habit of running 2-3 mornings a week, then, when we resume school, we’d already be up so it would be easy to get an earlier start and get more done in the mornings so our afternoons aren’t so rushed.

And, we also talked about them working more independently next year and which subjects we’d probably still need to do together versus which ones they could do on their own and they both seemed excited about the possibilities. We may be turning over a whole new leaf, y’all.

If you follow Weird, Unsocialized Homeschoolers on Facebook, you may have already heard me recount the following funny experience I had with my smartphone the other day. If not, though, I think you’ll like this one.

My phone knows me so well. You know how smart phones will suggest words for you as you’re texting? I was trying to answer someone who had texted me to confirm something I had asked them. I was going to say, “I thought so, but I wanted to be sure.”

My phone thought I might want to say, “I thought so, but I wanted to be antisocial.”

I do often want to be antisocial, but that wasn’t quite what I was going for. It sure did make me laugh, though.

You may or may not know, but I had to kick one of our inside cats out a few months ago. She’s a great cat, but not a good inside cat. We were a bit worried about how she would do since she’s so skittish, but she’s really blossomed outside. She’s become quite the hunter, too. Lately, she’s been leaving us little presents of dead rodents on our welcome mat.

She cracked me up Wednesday night because we were gone when she brought the latest present. I noticed it as soon as I opened the front door, though. She jumped up on the front porch railing and looked with an expression that suggested that as soon as I saw this wonderful gift, I would praise her and invite her in the house.

I took the dogs out and, as I passed her, did compliment her on being such a wonderful hunter. I left the front door open while I was taking the dogs out and when I looked back, the cat was sitting up on her hind legs, staring in through the storm door as if expecting that I was just taking my time about letting her in. Poor girl. She’s sweet, but it’s not happening.

Later, as I swept the dead mole off the porch, I told her, “Thank you so much for your thoughtful gift. I’m going to sweep it off the porch into the mulch now. That’s just where we store our dead rodent gifts.”

I don’t think she believed me. Brian summed it up perfectly when he suggested that she was thinking, “Ungrateful human.”

Now, I’m off to enjoy my day. It’s company picnic day, another day that the kids look forward to all year. Oh, and yeah, I turn 44 tomorrow. There is that. I feel rather old.

  1. Happy birthday, Kris! I’m 40 this year and am struggling to come to terms with the fact that 40 must mean I am an adult. I’m just not mature enough to be an adult. I’m like a fine wine…I’ll reach my prime when I’m well aged (that would be a few years from now).
I’m very much enjoying Made to Crave. Thanks for the recommendation.

    1. You’re welcome! I pulled out my copy, too. I haven’t had time to start reading it again, but it’s sitting on my bedside table reminding me to get busy. 🙂

  2. Hey Kris – Happy Birthday! Hope you have an awesome one! And just a little funny relating to kids becoming more independent in their school work… Recently we were having a conversation with family about teachers and my 14 yo daughter made a comment about how I’m not really her teacher. I got ready to get all huffy and offended about that when she clarified that she really teaches herself much of what she learns in school and I mostly facilitate it (or something similar). I realized that she’s exactly right and that it’s the way I really want it to be, and I decided to be proud of that instead of offended that she doesn’t think of me as her teacher (in the public school sense of the word). Love that stage when they can do their own thing school-work-wise!

  3. I’ve been thinking about seeing Maleficent, but it’s on my daughter’s want to see list, so we’ll probably wait until I can preview it for her on video 🙂

  4. Enjoy your date week and congratulations on graduating Breanna! A noble accomplishment.

I initially forgot to put your label on my homeschool post. I put it on today…I am usually better about remembering. Sorry.
