Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! So, apparently we survived our first week back to school. It’s always kind of a mixed bag getting back into a routine after a long break – it’s good to get back to normal, but it’s not without its bumps along the way.

Monday was that kind of day. It was mostly good, but it had its moments of frustration, too. It didn’t help that Brian had to go out of town Sunday morning and didn’t get back in until late Monday evening. Plus, it was the first day back for Megan’s gymnastics class, too. So, we went from having nothing going on to having everything going on without Dad’s help.

Actually, though, Brian got back just in time to take Megan to gymnastics. He offered and I took him up on it so that I could catch some things up around the house and have some time to just hang out with him once they got home.

There was one thing that started Monday off great, though. I woke Megan up early and we went to breakfast together. Sunday morning, as I was getting ready for church, I was thinking about how I really need to be investing in relationships – starting with those at home and working my way out. Those thoughts were confirmed when I got to church because that’s essentially what the message was about.

My mom, my sister, and I used to go to breakfast on Friday mornings and we all really enjoyed it. I decided that I’d like to start that with the kids, but one at a time so that I could have some one-on-one time with them. I decided to start with Megan since she’s the youngest and always winds up last when we go in birth order. (Josh thought that was a great idea since he’s second no matter where I start.)

I didn’t tell anyone I was going to do the breakfast thing in case something didn’t work out. I didn’t anticipate how excited the other kids would be for their turn. They’ve both already asked a couple of times when they get to go. I think this is going to be one of my better ideas.

First day of school 2014

Tuesday was a good day because we got to spend the afternoon bowling with friends. There was a time when I never would have considered doing that on the second day back to school after a break. I’d have wanted to hit the books hard. Now, I realize that my kids need time to invest in relationships, too. So, we went out for bowling and laser tag and, of course, had an amazing time.

Don’t you love those families where everyone gets along? The son and Josh are buddies. Megan and the daughter are BFFs. The mom and I get enjoy one another’s company. And, Brianna is old enough the she enjoys chatting with the moms. This time there was another family that came along and they fit right in, too. (Except, more likely, I fit in since those two families have known each other quite some time.)

Wednesday was another great day. We babysat my newest niece so my sister could run some errands. As I mentioned on my Facebook page, homeschooling with a sweet little baby niece isn’t any easier or any faster, but it’s a lot more fun. {grin}

What’s really cool is that all the kids are big enough that we could pass the baby around and still get school done. I held her while I did read aloud time. Megan held her while she did grammar. Josh held her during spelling. Brianna had talked about holding her while she did her math, but she had her the majority of the time my sister and I were talking before she left to run errands.

Thursday was one of those “hit it hard” days and a little bit of catch up time. The younger kids loved dusting the microscope off to use with our new science. The first lab we did was really just getting acquainted with the microscope – learning all the parts and how to care for it – but we couldn’t resist pulling out a slide to play around with.

Today is a bit more catch-up. Then, this afternoon, a big moment – I’m taking Megan to get a hair cut. She hasn’t had one in forever. Her hair is so long and she really doesn’t want to get much cut, so it probably won’t be traumatic, but she’s a little nervous after a bad cut a few years ago.
