Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday! I am always so glad it’s Friday. I love homeschooling my kids, but I never fail to enjoy looking forward to a couple of days with a little less on the agenda.

For those keeping tabs – which is probably no one – I did not make my goal of being up by 8 a.m. each day this week. I was proud of myself for making it on Tuesday, even though I was up until after midnight because Brianna had to work until close. Then, I started feeling the first stirrings of a weakened immune system.

I had a sore throat and just felt kind of run-down, so I slept in a bit on Wednesday. It seemed to do me some good, but my throat was very sore – to the point of keeping me awake – Wednesday night and apparently I forgot to set my alarm. I’m ashamed to even tell you what time I woke up on Thursday.

Except that probably makes it sound worse than it was. I woke up at 10 a.m.

After posting on Facebook asking for sore throat remedy suggestions, I wound up drinking what sounded like a really nasty concoction, but it turned out to not taste too awful and it really seemed to help. Should you ever need to know it’s two tablespoons each of honey, lemon juice, and apple cider vinegar with a dash of cinnamon in about a cup of hot water.

It sounds terrible and it was a little funky, but the taste kind of grew on me and it really did help.

The most exciting news at our house this week was that Brianna got her driver’s license! She is officially a licensed driver. I’m so proud of her.

The least exciting news at our house this week was finding out how much it’s going to cost to insure her. Yowza! And, she’s an 18 year old girl. I told Josh he needs to quit worrying about saving for a car and start saving to pay his insurance instead. I knew it would be expensive, but I didn’t expect it to double our insurance, especially since the vehicle she’ll be driving was already insured.

Poor kid is getting a rude welcome to the real world, realizing that paying her bills (her phone, gas, and insurance) won’t leave her with very much money to enjoy. Yep, that’s reality for most of us.

I think that’s about the extent of our excitement for the week.

  1. Hope you’re all better to enjoy the weekend.
Yay for Brianna! You’ll have your own personal taxi driver now, instead of being one. Just think of the possibilities….

    1. Oh, friend, I have been thinking about the possibilities. Believe me, I have. Now, if I could just figure out a way to bring them to fruition without somebody having to sell a kidney to pay for the insurance. {sigh}

    1. Okay, I’ve just got to say…that sounds awful! 🙂 I’m not being mean. Really. I’m smiling as I type this and definitely do it if it works for you, but that sounds like a great way to ruin a good cup of hot chocolate. Maybe it’s because I don’t like spicy stuff at all. That being said, I had many suggestions in response to my sore throat query that included cayenne pepper, so I’m sure it works and is good for you. I’m just not that brave.

      1. Haha, I don’t blame you then. If you hate spicy stuff you won’t like it! But it WORKS and to me apple cider vinegar is way WAY worse in taste. 😉 Cayenne isn’t even something you can taste but it does have that hot burn that you get from spicy foods depending on how much you put in. If you’ve found something that helps you and you can handle the taste I would stick with it – I know ACV works, I’ve used that before. 🙂

        1. Maybe that’s why it wasn’t so bad to me. I like apple cider vinegar. I mean, I wouldn’t drink it straight up or anything, but I use it in salad dressings and such.

  2. I called a few months ago to see how much it would be to add my son to our insurance. Needless to say I had to be picked up off the floor! So I still have a son without a driver’s license.

  3. Hah, I hate apple cider vinegar, but Grandma has convinced us that it will prevent a cold, so every morning my daughter and I drink 2 T mixed with water. It would be worse with all the extras, I think! LOL I’m glad you’re feeling better.

My son got reductions on his insurance cost because of his marks, taking a driver’s ed course, and doing some extra driving practice with me. Perhaps your insurance people have something similar.

  4. We got that rude insurance awakening earlier this year. Adding girls these days is not really cheaper than boys, they’re just as likely to be distracted or get into an accident. We also have a car for her to drive and that didn’t help the situation. I think if we had three drivers and two cars, it would be less than three cars/three drivers. It is super helpful to have another driver.

    1. I had that same thought, Debbi – I think it would have been less expensive if we’d had just 2 cars and 3 drivers because they automatically assume Brianna is going to be the primary driver of the third vehicle. That’s not really the case; it’s just the only vehicle we’re willing to let her drive. It’s not her car. I am looking forward to having another driver, though. I’m such a homebody and she won’t mind running all the little errands that I dread…at least, not until the new wears off. 🙂

  5. Good idea to abandon early-rising plans when there’s a virus brewing. False economy not to, really!
I’m not sure how I”m going to cope when evening pick up times get later. I”m an early bird so 830PM pick ups are bad enough for me – I like the ones where I don’t have to get out the car so I can go in my pyjamas. 😀
Congratulations to Brianna on her drivers license!

  6. I have to say the concoction does sound a bit odd, but this time of year I’ll try anything to ward off a sore throat, too. I remember as a child gargling with hot salty water. It only helped momentarily. I do hope you feel better soon.
I shutter to think what it will cost when our three are old enough to have a car. I’m so not looking forward to them growing up. I want them to stay little forever. I love the age they are now 9, 7 and 5. We have a lot of fun together.

And, thanks for always hosting Weekly Wrap-up. Even when you are under the weather.

    1. Yes, I’ve done the saltwater thing, too, and it does help for awhile. I wound up drinking the strange concoction three times – twice the first day and once the second. It worked every time for several hours and I really think it’s why I only had the sore throat a couple of days. That first day was bad enough that I was thinking I might have strep, which I never have before. So, even though it was a little funky tasting, I’d definitely try it again.

  7. Wow, cannot believe your dd is a driver! Amazing.

Happy you are feeling better! Good remedy to know…..

Linking up a little “late”…was not well last week, but on the mend now, slowly .

Thanks for hosting the WWU link Kris…

    God bless

  8. Praying that you are on the mend!!
My son is going for his permit late next month. I can’t wait to see what his insurance is going to cost. And we live in rural MN!!
