Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve had a fantastic week. It’s been a much better one here than last week. The fact that it’s felt like fall and I’ve been able to turn off the AC and open the doors and windows has only made it that much better.

First up, Megan’s new ‘do. She has long been into funky hair colors. She used to use colored hair spray. Earlier this year, she did a bright red, which was really pretty on her. This time, she did blue and purple on the top with black on the ends.

I know some people think I’m crazy, but to me it’s just hair. It will grow. The color will wash out. It’s a non-permanent form of self-expression that doesn’t bother Brian or me in the slightest. Plus, she pulls off the blue hair really nicely.

Not only does Megan get to enjoy a bit of individuality, but Brianna gets to practice doing hair color and I get a return on my cosmetology school investment. That makes it win-win-win.

I really love the purple. If I wasn’t so old, I’d consider some purple streaks for myself.

On Monday, Brian and I celebrated 24 years of marriage with lunch out and a couple of hours wandering around the mall together. I am so blessed to be married to this man. Check out that mullet (because if you’re focusing on the mullet, you may not notice my giant hair).

On Facebook I said, “He is more than I ever could have hoped for. He spoils me. He talks me down from the ledges. He puts up with all my crap, of which there is much. He supports all my crazy schemes. Plus, he gets stuff off the top shelves for me and kills bugs. I’m looking forward to another 24 years.”

My mom suggested that I left out the fact that he loves my pets, but I said that they probably fall under the headings of spoiling me or putting up with all my crap. {grin}

Wednesday was our last swim day with friends. It’s probably a good thing it was our last day because it was downright nippy out there for a little while – and I didn’t even get in the pool. We had a little pizza party to end the year. You can’t go wrong with teens, pizzas, and a pool.

I wish I had some pictures from yesterday. I decided to do some yoga for my workout time since my back and hip were killing me. (It was very effective for relieving the pain, by the way.) I wish I could find a good yoga DVD.

I really, really like this YouTube yoga workout, but it takes longer than it needs to because of the explanations. I wish there was a follow-up course to lead you through the moves once you’ve got the hang of them. I could just write down the order and go through with them, but I don’t enjoy that as much. Any suggestions?

Anyway, about the picture. I did the workout in the living room instead of our basement as usual. I totally felt like the crazy cat lady. When I was doing the cat pose, I literally had 3 cats on the mat with me.

Now that Labor Day is almost here and all the kids’ friends will be back to their regular school schedules, I’m ready to start adding in some electives. I can’t wait to start this ASL course with Josh and Megan! I think Brianna may join us, too.

I took ASL courses in college to become an interpreter, but quit after just a semester or two to work full-time. I’ve always been very interested in sign and so has Brianna. I’m excited that I’ll have built-in practice partners. Still, I’ve been toying with the idea of joining the Facebook group that goes along with the course in order to find some adult, online practice partners. Are any of you taking the course? If so, let me know if you’d like a practice/accountability buddy!

We’re taking our first break week the week of Megan’s birthday, September 14, so I’m going to wait until after that to add in the personal finance course the kids will be taking. They’re going to do the Dave Ramsey homeschool course. I got two extra student workbooks back when Brianna did the course, so I’m all set.

I’ll confess that I’ll be stalking the mail carrier today and tomorrow. The September Fair Trade Friday box shipped on Tuesday. It will probably be here tomorrow. I don’t think I ever shared photos from last month’s box. I wanted to wait a while so the people who hadn’t received their boxes yet could be surprised, then I forgot. Because I’m old.

The August box was probably the best one yet. It was a special one-year anniversary box and I absolutely loved it!

Fair Trade Friday August Collage

It contained a gorgeous necklace of which every piece was significant. The paper beads were made by one group, the clay beads another, and the tassel yet another, which the charm being donated by The Vintage Pearl, and each piece had a specific meaning. It is a beautiful necklace that this not-a-jewelry-person girl is proud to wear.

There was a hand-stamped dish towel from India. Then, there was what was, hands-down, my favorite item and one that I have worn every single day since it arrived – a hand-woven friendship bracelet from the Philippines. I’ve wanted an ankle bracelet like this forever, so that’s the way I’ve worn it. It makes me smile every time I put it on.

If you haven’t joined the Fair Trade Friday Club yet, do it! It’s so exciting to look forward to the shipment of beautiful products each month and even more exciting to know that your purchase is empowering impoverished women around the world.

  1. Having successfully negotiated all four of our children into adulthood, I can say with confidence that it doesn’t matter if some people say you’re crazy for the way you choose to live your life as a family — those some people are always there, and their mission in life appears to be to live out their own insecurities by criticizing others.

As you say, hair grows out. Big deal. Our own daughters have colored their hair in hues I didn’t even know existed!

    1. Yeah, maybe…but my kids would disagree. I’m working on not embarrassing them anymore than absolutely necessary. 😉

  2. Well, the hair thing isn’t always limited to girls. One son went bold blonde one summer just to see how he’d look (we have dark brown hair). It grew out and he was content then.

Happy Anniversary! We celebrated 26 this year and I totally recognize that wedding “era”. 🙂 Our kids get lots of laughs at 80’s hair!

    Have a beautiful weekend.

    1. I hear you on the hair. I have a friend whose son wanted to dye his green. I have no idea why green, but she let him because it’s only hair. I think he might have been purple for awhile, too. It’s just a matter of kids wanting to express themselves.

Thanks for the anniversary wishes. ’89 must have been a good year for marriages because I know lots of people celebrating 26 years this year. 🙂 Congratulations to you and your husband!

  3. I love her hair! My best friend is 54 and has blue and purple in her solid grey hair…so I think you could totally rock a little purple in yours!

    Happy anniversay week!
