Weekly Wrap-Up

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you’ve had a fantastic week. It’s been a good one here. Yes, I did just say that – at the end of our first week of school for the year.

A lot of people freshen up their school rooms with flowers or a fresh coat of paint. Not us. We freshened up our schoolroom with not one, but two new kittens. Because we’re crazy. And they’re insanely cute.

As usual, they are rescue kitties – I really need to stop following the local animal shelter on Facebook. The orange tabby is Jack and the white and gray tabby is Chloe. Brian and I both said if we believed in reincarnation – which we don’t – we’d be certain Gus the First was back in that little orange tabby.

The animal shelter had the kittens at a PetCo location. The night we went to get them (on purpose because we’d already seen them on the shelter’s Facebook page), we took them in a little room PetCo has available to play with them a bit and see if they were going to be a good fit.

Brian sat down on a bench and I put Jack on the floor. He walked right over, sat on the floor in front of Brian, and just looked up, directly into Brian’s eyes with the most direct, trusting stare I’ve ever seen.

That was it. He was going home.

Chloe, on the other hand, was working her cuteness charms after discovering a live cricket in the floor. She played with it, demonstrating what a good mouser she could be. {grin}

See? Doesn’t she just brighten up a school room?

It’s been a strange first week of school. Josh has been in a driver’s ed course all week. I’ve got to brag on that boy. It’s his first-ever classroom experience. He was really worried about it that first day and he said it was awkward because he was the only homeschooled kid in the class. Because his dyslexia makes it difficult for him to take notes quickly, he really had to work hard in class. Then, he came home and studied hard each night.

He called me yesterday at lunch to tell me that he made a 100% on his test! I was so proud of him. He worked hard for that and really deserved it.

Megan jumped right into her regular schoolwork on Monday. She’s worked hard this week, too. She was invited to spend the night with a friend on Wednesday, so Monday, she got her whole week planned out in her student planner and really worked hard to stay on track and get her work completed so she could go.

Oh, by the way, I finally updated my curriculum page. I usually try to do a special “share your curriculum” Weekly Wrap-Up, but I haven’t had it together this year. I know some of you have already shared your curriculum. If you haven’t, feel free to link that up this week in addition to your Weekly Wrap-Up post.

In case you missed it, I shared a couple of articles at About.com this week. The first is for all of you who will soon be homeschooling high school students 4 Things You Need to Know about Homeschooling High School. (If that describes you, please join me for a free homeschooling high school webinar next Tuesday, July 28!)

The second is for all of you – all of us – with reluctant writers. Check out 8 Creative Ways to Encourage Writing.

That’s it for me this week. Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Oh, so much cuteness! We’re at the not so nice stage of watching our elderly cats (20 years and counting) going down hill. Our Lucy is struggling to walk, permanently confused as to where she is and often ‘forgets’ to use the cat litter. It’s really sad to see, but 20 is a good old age to reach so I guess we can’t complain.

    1. That’s so sad. It’s hard to watch them get old. My step-mom had a cat that live to be 18. She (the cat) was born under my step-mom’s son’s bed. It was so hard for her when the kitty passed.

  2. Aw, love the new kitties! We have one cat, and the kids sometimes try to convince me she needs a friend. Thank you so much for hosting. I really enjoy this link-up each week. And it keeps me motivated with my record keeping! Have a great day.

    1. If your cat is anything like my older one, she’s happy not to have a friend. Luna isn’t too impressed with the new babies. She’s quit growling and hissing at them, though.

  3. My kids would LOVE it if we could brighten our school room with kittens! My hubby still says no cats in the house. I am looking forward to the older learning to drive. Isn’t that weird? I love driving and I think my son will do a great job. My second, the girl, is the one who has her head in the clouds a lot. Thankfully we aren’t there yet.

    1. My son is a good driver, too. The girls worry me for the same reason you stated.

Last week my husband and I were discussing the pros and cons of house-shopping. He mentioned that if we moved we wouldn’t have animals in the new house. That settled it for me. We’ll stay where we are.

  4. Gah! Now I want some kitties in my school room! Our beloved Xander had to be put down last summer at the ripe old age of 13. 🙁 BigG still misses him and talks about him often. And there are times I miss snuggling with soft kitty fur. But then I remember the litter box, hairballs and all the cat food that has to be bought. LOL.

    1. Aw, that’s a good, old age for a cat. Lots of good years together. The litter box is definitely not fun, but I can’t go long without a cat in the house – or a dog. I love them equally. 🙂

  5. I can’t wait to see how many animals you have when all the kids are gone. I think you have a tendency towards a crazy cat lady. 😉 Love you, friend

    1. Yeah, my brother-in-law said, “She’s like the crazy cat lady, but she has a husband and kids. It doesn’t make sense.” LOL

  6. I love the new editions. My daughter would adopt a new cat every school year if we let her. We’ve decided three inside cats are enough. Yours are adorable though. I’m glad Luna has stopped hissing. The introductions are such fun.
