I have found that my kids need a lot of repetition and review to retain information, so I came up with a handy review system for history and science, our only two subjects that don’t easily offer daily review.

I write down key facts and vocabulary, usually in Q&A form, on 3X5 index cards. I usually write the question or vocabulary word on the front and the answer or definition on the back.

Then, I punch a hole in the corner of the cards and put them on a ring similar to a key ring except that it opens so that the cards can easily be placed on the ring. The rings are inexpensive and easily found at most mass retailers (i.e. Walmart and Target) or office supply stores. I then put the ring around one of the three rings in the binder for each subject, so that the cards are easily accessible and always with the right book.

This makes it easy to review a little each day, as well as at the end of units and randomly throughout the year so that important facts are not easily forgotten.

  1. Great idea! My daughter is only two, but she loves flash cards. I hate them because any time she gets them in her hands they are as good as lost. This would be a great way to help keep them together!

  2. I love that idea! It would be especially helpful for my oldest daughter with history facts and vocabulary. I’m going to try it!

    Thanks for sharing!

  3. Great idea! I’ll have to try that out!

Do you just focus on one year’s cards at a time, or do you dig out cards from past years to review with them too?

  4. I have been using this idea since the first time you introduced it. It works for me too. I use it for all kinds of things. 😉

  5. Angie,

Yes, I usually just focus on one year at a time, though it would be easy to pull out previous years — and not a bad idea! You could just put the cards in the current book and pull them out from time to time.

Hmmm…you’ve given me another idea. I might have to do that.

  6. LOL Mamosa. It took me a minute because I usually read my comments in my email, so I couldn’t remember what was on the card. I was thinking that I wrote “Pax Romana” on the front and spelled it wrong or something! LOL I even looked it up in SOTW before I realized that you were answering the question.

Getting old is so hard once the mind starts to go. 😉

You got the answer right, btw.
