Works for Me Wednesday: Spicing Up Homemade Cakes

Today is Josh’s birthday. I can’t believe my boy is 9 years old. The time goes entirely too fast.

He wanted a cookie cake for his birthday party. Being the cheapskate frugal mom that I am — not to mention the fact that I make a pretty tasty pan cookie — I decided to make the cookie cake myself.

However, I wanted it to look more like a cookie cake and less like an ordinary, average pan cookie. So, I pulled out my decorating tips from the one and only Wilton cake decorating class that I took and a tub of Betty Crocker icing that I got for free at Publix and went to work.

First, I added a little confectioner’s sugar to the frosting to make it a little thicker (thanks for the idea, Susan!). Then, I added a border, a birthday message and some little icing stars on which to put the candles (and to fill up the big empty space since I’m spatially-challenged).

Granted, it’s not a professional job and if you look closely (please don’t!), you can see the mistakes, but it was enough to impress Josh and it definitely made the cookie look more special.

I know you can buy the tips and icing bags at many bakeries and even at many mass-retail stores. With a little investment and some practice with the tips, anybody can add a little pizzazz to an ordinary cake and make it look more festive and it can be done very inexpensively. It works for me!

Happy Birthday, Josh!!! I love you, buddy!

  7. @ Mitchell — Oh, it was totally a Nestle Toll House pan cookie, made straight from the recipe off the back of the bag. 😉 Really.
