Emma mentioned a while ago that she wanted to make some bookmarks for her books. To be honest, however, I filed the idea away for a while since we’re in the middle of a very busy dance season. The other day I remembered that I have a basket of fold-over elastic headbands and chiffon flowers. I bought them with the intent of making baby headbands, but I never got around to it. Lucky for Emma! The supplies were perfect for making no-sew elastic bookmarks.

No-Sew Elastic Bookmarks

Emma had a friend over, and they were looking for something to do. I wanted to give them something that wouldn’t create a big mess. So, I gathered the following supplies for the girls:

  • fold-over elastic headbands
  • chiffon flowers
  • glue sticks
  • glue gun

The girls had so much fun mixing and matching the headbands and the flowers. They were each able to use the glue gun to adhere the flowers to their headbands.

Emma’s sweet friend, Gracie, made some for her teachers. Emma made several for herself and immediately started putting them in her favorite books.

The neat thing about this craft is that there are so many options and alternatives. I’ve often seen elastic headbands at Wal-Mart and even at the Dollar Tree. Many craft stores sell elastic by the yard, as well, if you don’t have fold-over elastic headbands in your craft supplies.

As far as embellishments go, there are numerous options. You could use large, colorful buttons or foam shapes. If you’re feeling particularly crafty, you could make your own embellishments like the ones below:

Note from Kris: These would be nice to include with books you lend out to people if you, like Brianna and I, are in the anti-dog-earring camp. Dog-ear the pages of our books and you’re pretty much guaranteed we’ll never lend you another one. {grin}

How will you decorate your no-sew elastic bookmarks? Are you a dog-earring book marker?
