50 Things to Study this Winter

January 28, 2016 By Alicia Hutchinson

Written by Alicia Hutchinson of Investing Love.

Don’t let the cold and dreary weather stifle your creativity when it comes to homeschooling ideas this winter. There’s so much you can study to help you embrace the season. Just because the weather outside is frightful, you can embrace the season and get your kids (and yourself) excited about winter and all the great things that are happening!

Here are 50 – that’s right – 50 ideas of things to study this winter!

50 Things to Study this Winter

Cold Countries Around the World If you need to get in a little geography or cultural studies in this year, why not study some of the coldest countries in the world? It’ll make you feel better about how cold it is where you live…unless you live in one of these countries, in which case, plug in your heated blanket!

  • Mongolia
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • Kazakhstan
  • Iceland
  • Canada
  • Russia
  • Greenland
  • Antarctica

Winter Animals Especially for young kids, studying animals is so much fun. Here’s a list of some winter animals.

  • Polar Bears
  • Penguins
  • Sea Otters
  • Arctic Hares
  • Arctic Wolves
  • Caribou
  • Moose
  • Narwhal
  • Canadian Geese
  • Snowy Owls
  • Seals

Winter Nature Ideas Just because it’s wintertime doesn’t mean you have to stay inside. I know it’s cold, but just dress a little warmer. Here’s some things you can do to study nature in winter.

  • Feed birds
  • Animal hibernation
  • Study conifers
  • Maple sugaring
  • Animal tracks
  • Chilly nature walks
  • Moon study
  • Winter photography

Historical Events That Happened in Wintertime There are historical events that have happened on almost every day of the year, but these are a few that happened specifically in wintertime.

  • 1513 – Juan Ponce de Leon lands in Florida
  • 1770 – The Boston Massacre
  • 1776 – Common Sense is published
  • 1777 – Winter at Valley Forge
  • 1838 – Trail of Tears
  • 1860 – The Pony Express is founded
  • 1910 – Boy Scouts of America is founded

  • Ice on Whyte Festival (Canada)
  • The Winter Olympics (worldwide)
  • Varnevale (Venice)
  • Sundance Film Festival (Utah)
  • Mardi Gras (New Orleans)
  • Winter Carnival (Quebec)
